When the chill hits the air, it’s time to open your closet doors and take stock of your wardrobe for the season ahead. The biggest fashion myth is the idea that you need to start from scratch each fall. Rather, a fall closet refresh should include making sure you have the basics and building from there.
Basics include the basic colors, black, ivory and warm neutrals, and pieces that can be layered: shells, pullovers, trousers, simple skirts and a standard sheath. I like to go with moderately priced basics so that I can add a few statement or signature pieces that are investments that will last.
Once you’ve assessed what you have, what to donate and what needs to go into the garbage, take stock of what you need and what would be a “great to have.” Many people feel compelled to buy the latest trends. While some trends may be exciting, give thought to whether you truly will be able to make use of them, as well as if they are one shot styles. If a style is “in” this season, but the cut won’t suit your figure, or it simply doesn’t appeal to your personal sense of fashion, do NOT spend your money on it.
Further, if an item can only be worn one way, it may not suit your budget to spend on that piece. Consider if there are multiple changes to a piece that can give it lots of life. If you can add a sweater, jacket or different accessories to an item that helps it go from day to evening or work to play, you’ve found a piece to add to your collection that will be valuable.
Whether you are being budget conscious or environmentally mindful, you may want to look at resale sites (Poshmark, Vinted, Depop and the like) or local vintage shops. These are a treasure trove of clothing, shoes and accessories where you may find new pieces still with their tags or others that have had some gentle wear. This is a great way to add a little zing to your wardrobe without taking a big bite out of your wallet.
For fall 2026, there are a lot of trends that have come down the runway. Look at some of the more wearable looks for your daily life. I like the shaped jackets in leather or suede (real and faux) or heavyweight cottons. I’ve got my eye on a belted option that can be worn as outerwear or part of an ensemble. Asymmetrical tops and bottoms alike are another favorite and one that will likely give you a few seasons of wear. Deep reds and burgundies, chocolate brown, navy or electric blues, and olive green are the darlings of the runway. Each of these will last well beyond this season and is worthy of addition to your closet.
As you build for the season, look at the options, see which suit you best, be cognizant of the life of the item, and invest to complement what you already own. Then enjoy your closet and choose outfits that give you a sense of being able to take on the day.
