While I believe in sunglasses year-round, summertime is unquestionably their moment. This season, outside of sporty styles for the athletically minded, the number one trend is extra-large frames. From rhinestone-studded to round, almost bug-eyed styles, oversized is the theme. The added glam of eyewear like this is that it can add a lot of splash to a very simple ensemble.
As you choose a pair (or a few), keep in mind that your best bet is to select frames that work with the shape of your face. Not every style works for everyone. Choose what brings out your best features.
What would summertime jewelry be without beach-inspired styles? Look for sea stars, shells, and other ocean friends on large-scale rings and multi-strand necklaces. Not interested in a seahorse on your necklace? Don’t knock it till you’ve tried it—I have one, and it’s fun.
Tassels and beads are also top trends for the season. Both are offered in bright, colorful options for brooches and pins (I’ve held onto mine for sentimental reasons, and now they’re back!), charms for your handbag or tote, and, of course, bold, over-the-top necklaces, bracelets, earrings, and rings.
Metallic silver and gold, beautifully shaped options, are the alternate to the bright colors of the season. Remember, this season, bigger is better, so think maximalist as you choose your accessory items.
Bags and shoes are a mix of raffia, rattan, and weaves in oversized totes, sandals, and espadrilles. Suede is a surprising entry for summertime, yet hobo bags, small summer statement bags, sandals, and flip-flops are appearing in soft, smooth suedes—either in soft pastel hues or some of the summer brights we’re seeing so much of.
Ballet flats and Mary Janes are a big trend for the season, making it easy to move freely through warm days and evenings alike. Planning any travel this summer? You’ll be delighted to know that utility belt bags (please never say “fanny pack”) are a hot item for the season, making it easy to travel, hike, run, or do an array of other outdoor activities.
One other accessory item shining above the others this season is scarves. Wait—we’re not speaking of “wear them around the neck for warmth or style” scarves. We’re talking about transforming scarves into belts, shirts (be careful with this option), and headwear, either as a bandana or headband. Choose a color to match what you’re wearing, or bring the outfit to a new level with a dramatic color to grab the eye.
There is much to choose from this season of sunshine. It’s bright, it’s dramatic, and it has a flair for fashion. Choose the pieces that speak to you and make them part of your summer fun.
