Home & Garden: New Year, Fresh Space

294

Happy New Year! It is a time of resolutions and fresh starts, and your home deserves the same fresh beginning. Much like cleaning out your closet for the season, start in any room you choose and sort through closets, drawers, cabinets, and other nooks and crannies to remove unnecessary papers, decorative elements, and aging or worn items from towels to toiletries and more. Decluttering your space will make for a less stressful place to come home to.

Once you have cleaned out your space, it is time for a deep cleaning. This is not the daily or weekly cleaning. This is a time to clean cabinets inside and out, along with moving large pieces of furniture and all the items stored under the bed. That will allow you to get too hard-to-reach places and clean more thoroughly than time will typically permit. When you have cleaned and decluttered, take a moment to assess your plan for each room. Is it time to rearrange the furniture? Perhaps some movement and a change in the room’s flow is all the space needs. If you have tried that and are still not pleased with the result, give some thought to a few changes.

You need not spend a fortune to get your space feeling new again. If some new additions are needed, consider if going with a few new plants, artwork for the walls, or trim pieces like pillows will do the trick. That will keep costs down as you change things up. If more serious updating is needed, look at some of the trends you will see in home stores and online shops for 2026.

Home vibes are all about comfort now and for the foreseeable future. This starts with color, where you will find calming choices like caramel and butterscotch along with creamy whites and other rich neutrals as favored options. For those who need pops of color, this year’s champions are warm terracotta tones along with earthy greens or deep navies. Try one of these for an accent wall to create a statement spot in the room.

As you add furniture, keep in mind that rounded edges are the top choice. Oversized accent pieces and rounded edges for both main and accent items are the look of the moment. Curves are less formal and more comforting, making them an obvious choice for the embracing spa like designs many are selecting for their homes. Be sure to add some natural elements to your decor. These touches create a softer flow from one area to the next. Even small curved pieces can make the room feel more relaxed and inviting.

Whether you prefer stone or wood, each grounds the space in nature and provides the hard surfaces needed to balance the plush fabrics and rounded curves in the room. Do not hesitate to add metal to the overall design. This year, cooler metallics are getting a rest as aged bronze and brass take center stage.

There is no need to add a full home spa to create a space that is warm, inviting, and able to help you center after a long day. If your refreshed room provides you with a moment of Zen, you will have created the perfect place to come home to for your best year yet.
