Thick winter fabrics have a keen appeal during the holiday season. But, like those cartoons that show their characters having had enough of the cold the day after the holidays have passed, I am ready to move on to spring styles as soon as the ball has dropped, ushering in a new year. However, practicality dictates covering up when the temperatures are so low. That makes the key to transitional dressing choosing layers that combine pieces from the two seasons. In doing so, you will build an ensemble that is lighter than winterwear, keeps you warm enough until the thermometer catches up to your wishes, and keeps you feeling fashionable.
Some runway trends you’ll find readily available include rich fabrics such as leather, both real and faux, that feels buttery soft and comes in surprising, bright colors. There is no need to stick to black when burnt orange, rich chocolate, blues of every shade, and more are available. You’ll find dresses, shirts, pants, skirts, and jackets for your consideration. And with the super soft texture, you’ll feel more than comfortable with your selection or selections.
Gray tailored styles, from slacks to blazers to blouses, are the perfect layering wardrobe staples. Select the right fabrics to be sure you’re covered now and won’t overheat later.
Consider drapey dressing for a look that will bring you from winter to spring. Consider a draped dress or simply a draped top juxtaposed against tailored slacks for a fresh look.
Slip dresses are back with a vengeance this season. Pair a silk or lacey slip dress with a jaunty, new cardigan for an up to the minute look.
If you’re a fitness fiend, you can sport that athleticwear almost anywhere thanks to the prominence of athleisure by designers this season. However, if denim is more your speed, bubble, wide leg jeans are staying in the spotlight again this season. You’ll have options to be cozy from the moment you get out of your work clothes.
Shoes this season, whether casual or dressy, are trending toward suede and patent leather. Step into something a little unexpected with a suede sneaker or patent slingback to complete your look. Tall boots are another popular footwear trend this season. While not new, their staying power means it may be time to invest in another color. Handbags are a new take on the hobo bag, large and suede for a modern flair, or small leather satchels and baguette bags, continuing looks we’ve seen over the past few months.
If you are adding to your wardrobe this season, take the opportunity to select a few pieces in the season’s It color. Say hello to navy blue. Brighter than black and complementary to nearly every hair and skin tone, navy will be a smash for anyone who gives it a try. After the popularity of burgundy last autumn, with no complaints from me, it’s my favorite, navy will be an excellent partner for some of the rich burgundy pieces now in your closet.
If you love patterns and prints, get ready for vibrant, vintage florals. These aren’t dainty little flowers. Rather, they are demanding your attention. Wear a full pattern dress or a blouse with a solid skirt or trouser if you’re not sure the full ensemble is quite your speed.
It may still be cold outside, but with some well combined pairing, you can start to give spring a little push. When the calendar finally ushers in the new season, you’ll be well on your way to having the spring wardrobe you have been wanting.
