Autumn is the season of abundance. From indulging in delicious sweets at Halloween to enjoying the bounty of Thanksgiving dinner, this time of year is filled with joy, laughter, favorite foods, and–hopefully–the people who matter most to us. When decorating your home for this pumpkin spice-filled season, let that sense of plenty guide your choices.
The shift from summer’s warm, beachy vibes to the cozy, rich essence of autumn invites colors that conjure visions of dessert favorites. In addition to deep purple, 2025 brings nutmeg, cinnamon, ginger, and other earth tones–whether soft or bold–to spice up your rooms. You need not open cans of fresh paint to make a change. Instead, if you enjoy refreshing your décor each season, consider a neutral palette for your walls. This will allow you to transform your space in a matter of moments.
To make the most of the season’s décor, focus on trim pieces: pillows, throw blankets, candles, decorative objects, artwork, and floral accents. Acquire enough items to layer. Working with a neutral sofa? Try several pillows [I’m not advocating for pillows with phrases on them…I never will] in varying shapes and fabrics. Faux fur, velvet, and other lush materials create inviting seating. Finish the look with a soft, plush throw blanket draped over the couch. Pro tip: place a small throw over the back of a barrel chair or other single-seating option to make a space feel more welcoming.
Tables–whether dining, coffee, end, or sofa–as well as desks and mantels, are perfect for seasonal accents. Display candles with rich autumnal scents and colors or arrange dried flowers to add a pop of brightness. Truly, any flat surface is fair game.
Switching up artwork–whether wall pieces or small sculptures– can also enhance your palette. These don’t have to be expensive or particularly themed; choose pieces that make you smile.
While most people decorate their living and dining rooms, entryways, and even kitchens, don’t forget the front porch. Outdoor decorating gives you the chance to incorporate fresh, natural materials–hay bales, pumpkins, gourds, seasonal flowers, and a wreath. Whether you stack, cluster, or keep it simple with just one accent, natural touches add warmth and charm to your home’s exterior. It’s a wonderful way to welcome guests–whether they’re trick-or-treaters, neighbors stopping by for a cocktail, or loved ones gathering for a meal.
Adding seasonal décor to your home should not be stressful. Shop in large stores, boutique shops, online, or even at local fairs and festivals for the perfect finds. Beyond fresh outdoor materials, most items can be reused from year to year–sustainable, budgetfriendly, and always inviting. Best of all, you’ll return home each day to a space that makes you smile.
