Mother’s Day is coming and the question every year is: “What should I get for Mom?”  Typical gift guides offer ideas ranging from household ideas to dinner out.  I would like to offer some ideas for the fashion forward mom….the one who loves fashion and all the new things each season has to bring, but who often puts everyone else ahead of her own shopping wants and needs. Spring collections this year are as varied as the women who will wear them….so here are some thoughts to get you started…
Is Mom a shoe-gal (aren’t we all?)? This year’s trends include ultra-high heels, pointy toes, flats and lace-up oxfords. Look for rainbow prints, metallic colors, black and white combos, patent leather and, being spring, a touch of lace. Not sure what to buy or where? If you cannot pick out fabulous footwear on your own, try a gift card to her favorite shoe palace. I recommended exactly this as a holiday gift for a friend whose wife was thrilled with her gift!
Does Mom love a great new handbag (really, who doesn’t?)? There are so many fabulous styles this season – it is hard to name them all. The biggest trend is fringe and tassels, whether on the zipper pull or all along the bag. Chain straps are perfect when going someplace special, and the circle and semi-circle styles shown by nearly every designer are a great look. You can find oversized totes for the mom on the go, beautiful clutches for nights when mom gets to paint the town red, and structured square bags for ladies who love clean lines. There are metallics, sorbets, and black and white, as well as whimsical, almost pop-art designs to bring a smile. When shopping for a bag, consider her favorite designer or brand as well as when/where she will get to use it.
If she likes to accessorize, the look is a statement piece – something bold and beautiful to make her outfit come alive. Necklaces, bracelets, rings and earrings are all audacious this season, but be sure not to overdo it. Choose one big piece to avoid overpowering the outfit or the woman.
For the lady who loves her mani/pedi, this season’s colors are something to smile about. You will find resort and flower colors – Essie’s In the Cab-ana blue and Flowerista purple, OPI’s Rose Against Time pink. There are fun tie-dye looks, matte blacks for a softer black, and metallics and sparkles with a pale base shade. Consider a set of nail colors or create a gift basket with polishes, files, moisturizer and other nail accoutrements.
Fashion offers wonderful gift possibilities for Mom now and all year long. You can get her something for every day or treat her to something special that she would love, but may not spend on herself.  Show Mom you love her all year long…but, on Mother’s Day, shower her with a special fashion something to enjoy long after the holiday is over.
