Decades ago, Starbucks revolutionized what it meant to drink a cup of coffee. Once perceived only as the fuel needed to start our day, coffee has since become a cultural shift, an experience of customized brews for socializing, business meetings, or simply a good place to chill. Break out the laptop, plug in your buds, grab your iced latte, and you are good to go.
From tweens to seniors, the quest for the coffee house experience has immersed itself into our everyday culture. With that, there has been a surge of coffee houses cropping up all over Long Island, independent entrepreneurs looking to elevate the experience well beyond the commercial status quo.
I sat down recently with the owner of Mimi‘s Coffee and Tea to gain greater insight into what inspired her to open this cozy destination right here in Commack. As the owner explained, “Once traveling to the Dominican Republic a couple of years back, I had the opportunity to enjoy various coffee blends available in this country. I found the flavor to be somewhat different from the commercial coffee that we are accustomed to back in the States. Dominican coffee is distinguished by its well balanced, earthy, and full bodied profile, resulting from the country’s diverse, mountainous terrain and tropical climate.”
As someone who has tasted their coffee myself, I can tell you, there is no bitterness or aftertaste at all.
The owner continues, “Aside from elevating the quality of coffee, I wanted to create an alluring and more versatile social space with comfortable seating and soft music playing in the background.”
Since opening just a couple of months ago, customers have grown to appreciate the difference as well. The allure of Mimi’s stems from its ability to create a comfortable, versatile destination to relax, connect with friends, or simply reflect and think. It is becoming a movement, more like community than a transient kind of environment.
From lattes and cappuccinos to cold brews and bubble tea, the beverage menu is vast. Want to re energize with a refresher? You got it, Mimi’s Coffee and Tea has ten different kinds to choose from. Trending now at Mimi’s is their Matcha, a green tea based beverage that can be prepared hot or cold. Not only is it good, but healthy too.
Ah yes, you have got to try their Affogato, an amazing Italian dessert consisting of vanilla ice cream topped with a shot of espresso. It is insanely good. Pair it with one of Mimi’s freshly baked croissants, muffins, scones, Pain Au Chocolat, and a delicious latte, and you are all set to kick back and relax. Stop in during the morning hours and pick up a quick breakfast sandwich from Mimi’s Coffee and Tea as well. Try their breakfast egg and sausage croissant, savory and delicious.
Since publishing this article, I learned that Mimi’s Coffee and Tea has launched a book reading with local authors on Thursdays. What a great idea, a place for people to unwind, relax, socialize, and grow.
Today, coffee houses like Mimi’s continue to serve as community anchors, providing a reliable and inviting space for connection and reflection in our fast paced world.
Come and enjoy a new kind of coffee house experience that you will find only at the all new Mimi‘s Coffee and Tea.
