Culinary Influencer, Anna Francese Gass

What happens when the life that looks good on paper no longer feels good in your heart?

That is what made my conversation with Anna Francese Gass so powerful. On Secrets of Powerful Women podcast, Anna shared a story that so many women will recognize. She had the career, the education, the family, and the image of success. But deep down, she knew something was missing.

Anna did everything “right.” Raised by Italian parents who valued hard work and education, she excelled in school, went to NYU, and originally planned a future in psychology. But after college, like so many ambitious young women, she followed the path that seemed practical. She went into finance, worked on Wall Street, made good money, and climbed the corporate ladder.

From the outside, it looked like she was living the dream. But professionally, she was miserable. As Anna told me, she felt like a “square peg in a round hole.” She was succeeding in a world that did not light her up. And I think so many women know that feeling. You can be good at something and still know it is not meant for you.

After having two daughters, Anna hit a turning point. Sitting still long enough to really hear herself, she realized she could not imagine doing that work for the next 30 or 40 years. That honesty took courage—and so did what comes next.

A conversation with her father changed everything. He encouraged her to consider food, not just as a hobby, but as a career because she loved it. Anna pushed back at first because, like many women, she had been taught to think of the thing she loved as “extra,” not serious. But she listened to that inner nudge and enrolled in culinary school while raising two young children.

It wasn’t easy. She was commuting, parenting, studying, and showing up tired—but inspired! And that is the difference. When you are doing something that feeds your soul, it gives back to you.

From there, Anna built her career step by step, working at Martha Stewart Living, contributing to Food52, developing recipes, writing, learning, and growing. Then came her deeply personal cookbook Heirloom Kitchen, inspired by her Italian roots and the desire to preserve recipes and stories passed from one generation of women to the next. That book opened new doors, including regular television appearances, national exposure, and eventually a dream she never fully imagined would come true: her own cooking show, Instant Italian, produced by Rachel Ray and streaming on Hulu.

What I love most about Anna’s story is not just the success, although that’s great. It is her willingness to pivot and begin again. To trust that the next right step matters, even if you don’t see the whole staircase.

I think her message is one everyone needs to hear: life is short. Find what fills your cup because the thing that keeps calling you is there for a reason.
