Secret Power of Women: The Power of Showing Up

Some women have one successful career. Marysol Castro has built several.

When Marysol joined me on my Secrets of Powerful Women podcast, I was quickly reminded why her story resonates with so many women. She is currently the host of New York Living on PIX11, the public address announcer for the New York Mets, and a respected broadcast journalist whose career has spanned some of the biggest media platforms in the country. But her journey was anything but easy.

Born and raised in the Bronx to Puerto Rican parents, Marysol always knew there was a bigger world waiting for her. A full academic scholarship to a boarding school in Pennsylvania changed the trajectory of her life and opened doors she never imagined. At one point, she thought she would become a lawyer, even dreaming of being the first Puerto Rican senator from New York.

Instead, life had other plans. After teaching high school English, she enrolled in Columbia University’s Graduate School of Journalism and discovered her passion for storytelling. That decision launched a career that would take her from News 12 The Bronx to PIX11, Good Morning America, CBS News, ESPN, and eventually back to PIX11.

Along the way, Marysol learned one of life’s hardest lessons: success does not guarantee security.

Despite her talent and hard work, she was laid off multiple times during industry shakeups and corporate restructuring. At a dark point, she found herself navigating a difficult divorce, raising two young children as a single mother, facing financial hardship, and wondering what came next.

Instead of focusing on what she lost, she focused on what she still had: her skills, her work ethic, her ability to connect with people, and her willingness to learn. She took on projects outside traditional broadcasting, created content for schools, explored new opportunities, and kept moving forward even when the path wasn’t clear.

That persistence led to one of the most remarkable chapters of her career. In 2018, Marysol became the first female public address announcer for the New York Mets and the first Latina PA announcer in Major League Baseball.

The best part? The opportunity came because another woman recommended her when she wasn’t in the room. It was a powerful reminder that women supporting women can change lives.

Today, Marysol looks back on every challenge with gratitude. The layoffs, the heartbreak, all of it helped shape the woman she is now. She believes those experiences taught her who she really was and what truly mattered.

Her story is proof that setbacks are not the end of your story. Sometimes, they are simply preparing you for the next chapter.
