Nestled in the heart of Northport’s historic maritime village, Bistro 44 offers an elegant yet inviting dining experience that feels tailor-made for special nights out–or just a refined weekday indulgence. Just steps from the scenic harbor and the John W. Engeman Theater, it’s a go-to for pre-show dinners, date nights, or celebratory meals.
At its core, Bistro 44 is an upscale New American bistro with a menu that celebrates classic comfort food through a modern, global lens. It’s refined without being fussy, and the ingredients are clearly of the highest quality.
START STRONG
We kicked things off with two starters. First up: Thai Chili Calamari–a vibrant plate of crispy squid rings tossed in sweet chili sauce, paired with plantains, pineapple, and sweet piquillo peppers. It was sweet, salty, and carried just the right amount of heat. A flavor-packed beginning that hit all the right notes–crispy, tender, and bold.
Next, the French Onion Soup, a rustic classic done right. Served with cherry wine, garlic croutons, and Gruyère gratin, this rich, deeply flavorful beef broth with caramelized onions struck a perfect balance–comforting without being overly salty. A standout.
SOMETHING FOR EVERYONE
For my entrée, I couldn’t resist the Cioppino. The last time I had one this good was in Montauk. Bistro 44’s version delivered a wild, briny symphony of Maine lobster, clams, mussels, and shrimp, all swimming in a tomato and white wine broth with sautéed spinach. It was indulgent and generously portioned–too much to finish, but too good not to try. (Pro tip: ask for toasted bread to soak up the broth. You’ll thank me later.)
My partner went with the Sesame Seed-Crusted Bluefin Tuna. This sashimi-grade tuna steak was seared just right, its black-and-white sesame crust adding a nutty crunch to the tender, rare center. Served with sautéed French beans, pickled ginger, whipped potatoes, and a drizzle of honey soy sauce, it was a beautiful balance of flavors and textures. One bite in, and we were both stealing forkfuls from each other’s plates.
SWEET FINISH
With portions as hearty as they are here, we had room for just one dessert–but what a dessert it was. The Coffee and the Cigar is Bistro 44’s clever twist on a classic crème brûlée: a tres leches espresso custard layered with Tahitian vanilla bean, finished with ganache and served with a chocolate cigar. It was theatrical, nostalgic, and totally delicious.
To cap off the night, we strolled along the harbor under the stars–a perfect end to a memorable evening. Whether you’re looking for inventive cuisine, warm ambiance, or just a beautiful night out in Northport, Bistro 44 delivers on all fronts.
