Savory Eats For Mother’s Day

There are very few rituals I enjoy as much as a leisurely, Sunday morning brunch. This Mother’s Day, I am treating my mom to a few hours of good food and handcrafted libations in a serene, chic atmosphere. I’ve been to my fair share of brunches, conquering every establishment from country inspired cottages in the Hamptons to hipster-driven gastropubs in Astoria. While I wouldn’t take my mother to some of my favorite artisanal eateries in Astoria and Williamsburg, I was sure to select a short list of places I believe she would genuinely appreciate.
Let me preface this by saying that my mom is old school. She is also a very health-conscious customer. Therefore, I had to come up with a list of brunches that would offer flavorful, nutritious entrees, as well as the lavish, eccentric delicacies that I prefer to indulge in. I narrowed it down to Old Fields of Greenlawn, Tullulah’s of Bayshore and Café Joelle of Sayville.
Old Fields is known for their classic, refined menu and atmosphere. Dishes that arrive in hearty cast iron skillets, and conversation that is enjoyed within a comfortable, warm environment with family and friends. My favorite brunch entrees include The Steak & Eggs, a delightful combination of marinated skirt steak, two fried eggs, biscuit, and breakfast spuds and The A.M. Shrimp & Grits which includes poached eggs, bacon, cheddar grits, & a biscuit.
Tullulah’s of Bayshore is one of my favorite, and most personally-recommended brunches on Long Island. Everything from the urban, cozy atmosphere to the culinary details are recognized and appreciated by foodies and novices alike. The menu encompasses everything from classic Steak Frites to Fried Chicken and Waffle. If you’re feeling adventurous, opt for the Bahn Mi or Corned Beef Hash. I can whole-heartedly promise that anything you order will be good. Their ingredients are high quality and their presentation is nothing short of immaculate. One piece of advice: make reservations in advance or you may not get in.
Café Joelle is the type of classic eatery that foodies dream about. Simple and quaint, nestled on Main Street in Sayville, this restaurant is a must-try. Their brunch menu is straightforward and illustrative – comprised of classics such as Eggs Benedict and Buttermilk Pancakes. They also offer bold options such as Banana and Cream Cheese Stuffed Croissant French Toast and Eggs Oy Vey which is made up of two poached eggs, potato pancakes, smoked salmon and crème fraiche. I personally recommend the Eggs Benedict Joelle which consists of two poached eggs on a slice of filet mignon served on an English muffin topped with hollandaise sauce.
This Mother’s Day opt for a lavish, charming late-morning meal to show mom how much you appreciate her. Whether you choose to enjoy your brunch at a quaint, cozy eatery or adventure into a more modern menu, make sure to enjoy good conversation, quality food and most importantly, remind mom how grateful you are for everything she does for you, all 365 days of the year.

A sweet Mother’s Day moment, I’ll have breakfast with my Mom I’ll connect once again if only… in memories! Reminiscing of a Mother’s Day morning long ago in childhood I smile to myself ~ as my Dad always had the morning in control. The Victrola playing Al Martino, the pans, fans, percolators and toaster all going  full speed ahead for breakfast in honor of Mom …and her favorite meal! Whisking the eggs with milk, the sizzling bacon, sausage, and the fresh squeezed orange juice, the darkening scent of the English muffins popping up ready in just her desired shade warmly waiting for that savory spread of butter ~ was the scene! But… the chef in me was beginning to immerge ~ I wanted to take part in creating something tasty for my mother… just from me. With my Dad’s nod of consent ~ I went at it!  I put vanilla ice cream in a fancy bowl, drizzled with chocolate syrup (Bosco), topped with red maraschino cherries from the jar and spooned some juice for added color~ just wished I had some whipped cream? Hmm??? I used some raw egg whites and a bowl of sugar and beat with electric beater ~ till it looked sort of like whipped cream? Wa ~ La She loved the breakfast of course and was amazed at my encore ~ she asked eagerly for the secret ingredients that I so cleverly used and smiled as she tasted and critiqued. Certainly she delighted at my childish creativity and pretended to enjoy the taste… (Poor Mom ~ raw eggs?!) Her eyes sparkled at me like bright shiny stars. Afterwards we would go into the living room and in front of the big mirror we would slow dance cheek to cheek. (The best gift!)The breakfast, desert and the Dance! My Mom has been gone for many years but still I carry on her rite of motherhood with all those I love in honor of Mother’s around the Globe.

I hope this gives you the notion: “never lose your sense of wonder… and when you get the choice to sit it out or dance ~ I hope you DANCE! This Mother’s Day I will whip up that beloved breakfast and yes I do have a new improved version of the finale… fried fresh ripe pineapple slices in coconut oil with toasted pecans a drizzle of French liquor and truly real whipped  fresh cream with a tad of brown sugar! The taste ~ the smell delicious. “The “Dance”…intoxicating!

Mother’s Day Gift Guide 2017

Tammy Severino is the President of RPC Development, a business and development consulting firm for local businesses and not-for-profit organizations. She has more than 20 years of experience in writing, from business writing to journalism to creative writing, as well as in event planning for corporations, not-for-profit organizations and private clients.  In her spare time, this fashionista follows and writes about fashion, travel, and other lifestyle topics.
After a seemingly endless winter, spring finally sprung. April showers bring much more than May flowers. On May 14th it brings the ritual of celebrating that most important center of the family – Mom. How will you celebrate Mother's Day? For some, coming up with the perfect gift ideas comes naturally. For many, however, it is a challenge to choose the perfect gift for Mom. In an effort to assist this latter crowd (though even gift giving pros are welcome to partake), read on for a gift guide that I hope will spark ideas for the perfect gift.
No matter your budget there are wonderful gifts to be found for the Mom on your list. The key to all gift giving is choosing something she would like. Even if something is not your taste, if you know it is hers, you will be on stronger ground.  A gift may be an item, but it may also be an experience. Keep your mind open to both as you shop.
For an experience, consider an evening of dinner and a show – either at a local playhouse or one of LI's many venues bringing in top performers. On a tight budget? Try a certificate good for pizza and two tickets to see a movie she has been talking about. The time together and the thoughtfulness are what she will love.
Home delivery services are very popular right now. A subscription to one may be just the thing. If mom appreciates fabulous food, try Blue Apron (blueapron.com) or Hello Fresh (hellofresh.com). Each offers the ability to customize based on food preferences, budget and the number of people for whom you are cooking. If she is a beauty buff, Ipsy (ipsy.com) can send a monthly make up kit, and Birch Box (birchbox.com) can send a combination of skin care and make up to her door.
If mom is a fitness buff, consider a new Fit Bit to track her activity level, some workout gear (a yoga mat, weight set, etc.), or a new work out outfit to add some pep to her step. Whether your budget allows for Lululemon or Fabletics, you will have a great selection from which to choose.
What is mom’s favorite beverage? A tea set with her favorite blend, coffee with a great new mug (and something sweet to dip), or her favorite wine with two new glasses all make great gifts that say you thought about her.
I love gift baskets. They can cover a wide range of items with a theme. You can have a book lover’s basket, chocolate lover’s basket, crafting basket, scented candle basket and more. Each is stocked with the main items you would expect along with the small accoutrements that bring it all together.  You can buy all of the items you need and put it together yourself or call a basket making service to do it for you. They will work with your budget and build the perfect gift.
The most important thing about Mother’s Day is that it is simply one day to highlight to the mom in your life how much she means to you. The gift may come on May 14th, but remember to tell her how important she is to you all year long.

Thoughtful Gifts For Mom

Kristin has been working in the natural products industry for over fifteen years as an expert in holistic beauty products, nutrition and supplements. She just completed her first book, a memoir. Follow her on Twitter @kristinjoylavin or visit her website: www.kristinjoylavin.com

In beginning this article, I wanted to find out the origin of Mother’s Day. To my delight, it was not created by a card company but rather by Anna Jarvis in 1908, according to Wikipedia. When her mom died in 1905 she began a shrine to honor her mother’s work with wounded soldiers in the American Civil War. She thought all mothers should be honored and remembered and campaigned for a day to honor all mothers until it became official in 1908. Nowadays many holidays become about obligation because there are so many and because we are all so busy. Let’s not forget what Mother’s Day truly is; a time to honor a biological mom, an adopted mom, wife, a friend, a grandma, an aunt, a pet mom and any others who are special to us.

Gifts with meaning, no matter what their dollar amount are the most cherished ones. See below for some ideas to honor, spend time with and show mom how much she is loved. Of course, they are wellness inspired.

• Have Mom over for dinner or brunch and make her favorite dish or dessert. Something homemade is always special. Try an organic egg frittata with a salad or grilled wild salmon with quinoa and kale salad.
• Go see a funny or heart warming movie, eat popcorn and laugh. People who laugh live longer and deal with stress better.
• Music sooths the soul, take Mom to a concert. There is nothing like live entertainment to enjoy together. Try local options like The Paramount, John Engeman Theater, Jones Beach, the Theater in Westbury or NYC’s Broadway.
• Go for a walk and picnic in Central Park
• Take the ferry over to Fire Island and have dinner or lunch once it warms up.
• Take a day trip to Montauk, see the lighthouse and go biking.
• Visit an organic restaurant which supports local farmers and sustainability.
• Get Mom a yoga or gym gift card and take a class together.
• Buy her a juicer or blender to make healthy treats and smoothies.
• Buy a handmade, thoughtful gift on Etsy.com where you are supporting artists and craftsman. So many price ranges and options.
• Adult coloring is hot! Buy her a Zen coloring book and watercolor pencils. Coloring reduces stress and promotes creativity.
• Make her something homemade using your mad skills…knit a scarf, make an E-photo album, create a bouquet from your garden, paint her a pic, write a beautiful poem/note or bake some treats.
• Clean her house. This doesn’t cost a thing but your time and energy.
• Massage and facial gift cards are wellness gifts that feel good and are beneficial.
• Book a class at a paint studio where you can paint together and have fun.

Lastly, give that Mom you are celebrating a loving hug or kiss and tell her how much you appreciate her. That is one of the best gifts of all.

I remember my first mother's day and feeling this emotional realization. "Wow! I am really a Mom".  The precious handmade gifts I received with my son's cute handprints on them made my heart fill with gratefulness for this beautiful child that calls me Mama.  I suppose it is only because I have known such pure unconditional love from my own mother that I can pass on the same to my children. My mother has always put me first in her life and I was aware of this early on. I thank her for teaching me how to be a mother who listens, laughs, cares, is thoughtful and makes her children feel extra special. With that being said it is no wonder that I long to make my mother feel honored on this day.
This year it seems the days of handmade gifts have come full circle. Through the years I have celebrated mother's day with my mother by taking her to brunch, a broadway show or a much-deserved spa day. This year in addition to a traditional gift, I decided to make something personalized and unique.
A scrapbook type of collage of notable pictures created on a wood slab that can be hung on the wall. I bought an 11" x 13 " piece of wood from the hardware store, sanded it down, then painted it with a quick coat of basic white to give it a base.  Any size or shape of wood will work with this project. A medium size treasure box sold at craft stores can also be used.
For the next step print out a bunch of your favorite sentimental or silly pictures of mom using regular thin printer paper. Cut out all the pics. Don't worry about the size since you will probably have to overlap and trim as you design the images. When you have an idea of where you will place the pictures start to brush a decoupage medium on the wood and place your first picture, being sure to flatten out any creases. Continue to brush the decoupage glue and place the pictures until you have covered the entire piece of wood. Let it dry and the strategically place a few embellishments around the pictures to make it unique.  Secure with hot glue. A sawtooth picture hanger can be nailed to the back for easy hanging.
As a child, your mother surrounds you with her love and strength and encourages your light to shine. Mother's day is for all the mothers, grandmothers, aunts, godmother's or any special woman in your life who has loved and guided you throughout your life. Take that day to celebrate the beauty of that special person.

It’s often been said that every day is Mothers Day.  Yet having raised two sons, I am of the belief that our mother’s deserve at least one day of being honored.  I lost my beloved mother nearly two years ago and to cope with that loss, I have found several ways to honor her.  And for those of you whose mother’s are still in your lives, these ideas, I believe, will bring her much joy and satisfaction.

• Put together fond family pictures into a photo book that spans the years and decades.  There is nothing better than flipping through the pages so she can reminisce about milestone events, birthdays, and holidays that she, her children, and family celebrated.  Visit www.snapfish.com  or www.shutterfly.com to create a special book for her.  You can add your own text and designs to make it even more special.

• Create a vision board that includes your mom.  I started a vision board using oaktag paper—a collage of intentions, dreams, and goals in your personal life and career—a couple of  years ago and recently updated it with photos of me and my mom when I was a teenager and as an adult when we were at a special family event.  You can use pictures and sayings or words from magazines that “speak to you” in a way that will help you to realize your goals.  Frame it and place it on a wall that you will look at every day.

• Create a puja table (Hindu, prayer or ritual to honor someone) for your loved one.  When I lost my mom, I gathered pictures and fond objects that she loved and reminded me of her and put them on a small antique table she had given to me.  On the table rests a cardinal, a dolphin, pictures of her through the decades, and a small vase that I fill with flowers for her every week.

• Make a homemade brunch or dinner.  Who doesn’t enjoy a home-cooked meal, especially a hard-working mom?  And nothing tastes better than when it’s made with love.  Let your children decorate the table with crafts they’ve made at school and pictures made with homemade frames.

However you choose to celebrate your mom this Mother’s Day, no matter if she is near or far, remember to honor her with a special creation made just for her. Happy Mother’s Day to all you wonderful moms out there!

A Nearby Treasure: Cape May In The Off-Season

Tammy Severino is the President of RPC Development, a business and development consulting firm for local businesses and not-for-profit organizations.     Like most people these days, I run ragged until the need for a few days to unwind are more of a requirement than a nicety. While a weekend staycation is lovely, there are some truly wonderful locales within driving distance to our lovely Island. Off-season Cape May has become a personal favorite.
Cape May is, during the summer months, a vacationing mecca at the southern tip of New Jersey. During the off-seasons, it is a quiet retreat, complete with fine dining, historical touches, boutique shopping, an array of accommodations, and nature in abundance. Located less than 200 miles from LI, it is, quite possibly, a perfect getaway.
Exiting the Garden State Parkway into Cape May, you have a deep sense that the hustle and bustle is behind you. You enter a seafaring community filled with small shops, architecture reminiscent of the early 1900s and the soft color palette seen in towns along the East Coast.
Long strolls are a must during your stay. Visit Cape May Point State Park, where you may feel like the only person on the planet in winter or do some bird watching in autumn or springtime (Cape May is considered one of the world’s finest spots for bird watching, so it may not be for you if thoughts of Tippi Hedron give you chills).  You might prefer to get in your cardio strolling through town as you investigate the boutiques along the square. During the holiday season, you will be treated to lovely lights and decorations along your stroll. There are fudge shops, book stores, art galleries and more to peak your interest. Away from the center of town, but equally fun to browse, is the honey shop, where all-natural skin care, tea accoutrements and more, made from the fruits of local bees’ labours, are offered. Take time to glimpse the historic flavor of Cape May. You may even try a walking or trolley tour. I gave the ghost walking tour at Elaine’s a try on a crisp autumn evening for some added Halloween-like frights.
If you are a foodie, Cape May will not disappoint. Whether breakfast fare with a creative twist on old favorites or a spectacular dinner whipped up by a James Beard Award winner, The Red Store in Cape May Point is a fantastic choice. If you want to feel as though you have travelled back in time, stop for a bite at the Congress Hall Hotel where you can sip cocktails by the fire while waiting for your table at its Blue Pig Tavern. There is an ample supply of restaurants to visit during your stay. Whether you crave a culinary delight or a juicy burger, you will have no trouble finding the right place.
Cape May in the summer is beautiful and lush – with trees and flowers in bloom and an ocean that is calm and inviting. I, however, prefer all it has to offer when crowds die down and its charm can truly shine through.

Winter is behind us and gone… Emerge from hibernation all you “earthly creatures” of the green season~ bring your thoughts outdoors~ It’s time to refresh and immerse into the light, Celebrate Spring! Goat cheese filled tarts are just the treat to serve as an appetizer or atop of that fresh spring salad. Creamy, mild and tasty! Combine with those newly grown fresh picked herbs that pair together perfectly. Goat cheese is made from goat’s milk, with its pristine white color and distinct flavor, it’s one of the most amazing cheeses in the world~ so simple yet so good! Creamy warmed goat cheese blended with fresh herbs, spices, toasted pecans set inside of fillo  with a sweet drizzle of honey~ served on a bed of spring salad~ Wow! I use frozen mini shells (pre~ baked) amazing flaky layers of fillo (phyllo) dough, light and divine for filling with these ingredients. A little chop~ chop of your freshest choice of herbs (basil, parsley, thyme, marjoram, rosemary, fennel, oregano, sage.) Keeping them as whole as possible. Fresh herbs should always be seen and smelled and their lively, vibrant, green sweetness… tasted. Take your spring journey “eating with the season” ~into the rhythm of the “new harvest!”  A great and delicious way to enhance your salad and springtime!

Bake your mini shells (15 per box) at 350 degrees on a baking sheet for 3~5 minutes or  golden. (Cool)
1 log of goat cheese (softened in microwave for approx.  40 seconds for easier filling.)
A good Honey for that drizzle
Finely chopped pecans toasted in a pan with a bit of butter
Herbs of your choice chopped
Fresh black pepper
Sea salt
Spring salad mix

A light tangy dressing. I combined lemon peel, red wine vinegar, extra virgin olive oil, salt pepper and a bit of thyme. Spoon cheese into tarts and sprinkle with chopped herbs, toasted nuts, salt, pepper, and drizzle with honey. Serve on dressed salad. (I warm the tartlets up a bit) warm cheese tart on crisp cold salad ~ “A simple celebratory start to Spring Life!” xoxo, Dishin’ with Denise

“April showers (and Passover and Easter) have come our way” as that old old song goes and have been put in the books for 2017. Now for the spring flowers “that bloom in May” – and are we ever ready! The poor flowers didn’t quite know when to come up this year, but by Mother’s Day we’ll at least be able to decorate the inside of our homes with the wonderful scent of spring. While I hope that you’ve been at least filling one vase with fresh hot house purchased flowers weekly during the winter season, now is the time to decorate with the sight, scent and splurge of color only fresh flowers can bring.
You can start with the front door or even the front porch and while tulips are still in season, set them in a container that “loves their floppiness”, even an old bird cage or watering can or any old container to welcome you, as well as visitors.
    • Daffodils, pansies and forsythia make a great pop of yellow in any room and are easy to arrange together.
    • Mason jars or any glass jars make wonderful containers and if they are too large just put a smaller holder inside it.
    • If you are having company, especially for Mother’s Day, set each place with an individual small flower arrangement or create “break-aways” for a long middle of the table centerpiece.
    • Think “greens” as well as yellows, whites and pinks”.  “Grass” looks great as a backdrop or a centerpiece.
    • Think fruits and vegetables mixed with flowers or on their own.
    • You can keep your table “pastel airy” with soft light colored dinnerware and fabric placemats before you add your floral touches.
    • Think different heights and widths of complementary containers.
    • Perhaps you’d like to choose a theme to dress a table (i.e. – in the fall, our design firm was selected to create a table setting for the Long Island Harvest donor dinner and chose the sunflower as our theme. It was on chair backs, placements, in the white pumpkin centerpiece and even in specially made cookies!)
    • For a special dinner, perhaps one single flower can be artfully placed in a bud vase, napkin or across a serving plate for each guest.
So where should you bring spring flowers into your home?  EVERYWHERE – from powder room, to entry foyer, to bedrooms (guest and yours), to living rooms and dens, and of course, your dining room and kitchen. From table tops to shelving units to window ledges, in baskets, boots, jars, vases and almost any container, your home will be brightened with the touch of spring only fresh flowers and plants can bring. Just remember – water them, cut the stems and when their life is over, say good-by!

Toxic Kitchen?

Bill Lauto is an Environmental Scientist and Energy Consultant who has been teaching how we can save our money, energy, environment, and health, since 1982. Mr. Lauto operates GoingTrueGreen.com and his work has been published in magazines such as: Consumer Report, Kiplinger's
Financial and Business Ethics.

First, let us not become overly worried, but let us review and take some action. Toxicity levels in any household kitchen can vary tremendously. People will have an assorted volume of products in the closet or under the sink. Many items are commercial products to help clean an oven, sink, drain pipes, exhaust fans, all types of floors, countertops, stainless steel appliances, dishes, and silverware.

Then we go ahead with cooking and eating with many of these items just cleaned by any possible assortment of toxic chemicals. As I have stated in previous editorials, only 3 things Do Not put toxins into our food: Glass, Porcelain, and Wax Paper. Anything else can and will leach into our food and drink. Adding extra heat or cold to many chemicals will accelerate the transfer. For example, water inside a plastic bottle made with BPA chemicals will leak into the water faster when placed in a freezer or hot car. Now this will not harm you tomorrow, but perhaps we should look at these anomalies like smoking cigarettes. Why RISK potential health issues later in life?

Additionally, products such as some oven cleaners are problematic when inhaled or make contact with our skin. However, health hazards are not just from oven cleaners laden chemicals. Dish washing soaps that employ the use of sulfates in any amount should be avoided.

So what actions should we take? First read all the labels and look up the definitions to ingredients you are not familiar with or can't pronounce. Research new organic replacement products on the web and in stores. If you decide to toss a product for a natural one, that is great but DO NOT pour it down the drain or flush it down the toilet! Townships have programs to properly dispose of these products. We DO NOT want them going into our Waterways or back into our drinking water table in the ground.

To start everyone off on the path to no more chemicals, better health, and saving money, here is a Dish Washing Soap formula. Please realize that while this dish washing soap may not foam up as much as your previous brand, that does not mean an inferior job is being done.

Add the following into a Glass Mason Jar:
– Six tablespoons of liquid Castile soap*
– Two tablespoons of vegetable glycerin*
– A half of dozen drops of any essential oil for aromas*
Then mix in two cups of cold water and shake well. Also, shake before each use for best results.
* Buy in a Drugstore

As for Hand Soap, you can find many formulas online and shape them into many different designs. So creativity goes hand in hand with saving Money, Health, and God's Green Earth!

Beauty From All Angles

Kristin has been working in the natural products industry for over fifteen years as an expert in holistic beauty products
nutrition and supplements. Also a fitness instructor, she is passionate about the mental and physical benefits of fitness and encourages people to reach their goals while having fun. She just completed her first book, a memoir. Follow her on Twitter @kristinjoylavin or visit her website: www.kristinjoylavin.com

I’ve been working in the natural beauty industry for nearly two decades. While I love experimenting with different products, there are a few tried and true things that really work and are part of my beauty regime.

Oils
The oil balance of your skin is a really important part of it’s elasticity and suppleness. Having too much can result in pimples while not enough can cause aged and/or dry looking skin. I try not to strip my skin of it’s natural oils so I only wash my face once per day, at night. Washing with a gentle face cleanser will wash off the day’s makeup and dirt and it’s a great place to begin a nightly face routine. While your skin is still damp, follow up with a nightly moisturizer, a face oil like 100% argan oil or a targeted serum for your skin issue. If your face has already dried then spritz a beautiful all natural toner or mist before you apply your moisturizer, oil or serum. This preps the skin for uptake. Imagine a dry sponge and how much less it absorbs than a slightly moist one.

Detox your skin
Eating lots of healthy fruits and vegetable along with healthy oils from avocado or coconut is very beneficial for your skin. Use all natural and/or organic beauty products which will help skin absorb beneficial ingredients rather than harmful chemicals from conventional brands. Vitamin C serums help build collagen while offering protection by squashing free radicals. Check your local health food store for great organic brands like John Masters Organics.

Hydration
Water will keep your body and skin hydrated and supple looking. Filling up internal cells with water will keep the skin from looking saggy and dry.  Drink about 8 glasses per day of filtered tap water out of a glass not plastic which leaches chemicals into the water.

Exfoliation
There are a few ways to exfoliate at home. You can try a gentle facial scrub or an alpha hydroxyl acid mask. Many of these are made from fruit like pumpkin or berries. The acid and scrub loosen dead skin cells so that your body can make new ones. This kind of cell turnover is great for regeneration and helps prevent wrinkling.

Sun Exposure
Always wear a hat and/or sunscreen with a non toxic sunscreen ingredient from minerals like zinc. Limit your direct sun exposure to an hour or two a day. Then stay shaded where you won’t burn.

External Beauty Treatments
Getting a professional facial can really slow the aging process and help your skin produce collagen. There are many treatments to choose from including micro dermabrasion, micro needling, facial massage, extractions, light therapy and much more that help with the anti-aging process. Your esthetician can help choose what protocol to use with you based on your needs and preferences. Plus it feels great and is very relaxing.

On the other hand, I remember when there was one way to contact people right away. You phoned them on their landline.  There was no voice mail. They either answered or they didn’t. If not, you called back later.

Kind of simple. And nice.

Today I need a great memory to remember how to contact each person.

(Not their real names…)
“Trevor,” reads his e-mails only once a week.  For timely matters, I must call him on his home phone (Scratch that. Just got recording. “Been disconnected.” Now it’s his cell only).

“Mary” prefers I call only her cell phone so her husband can’t overhear our conversations.

“Dana” said her land line is currently not taking messages; I can still call her at home, but don’t leave a message there.

Our cat sitter will pick up messages from her land line only, not cell.

“Ariana” said, “Call me on either home phone or cell.” She’s a busy professional woman. Either way, I don’t reach her. With her, it’s e-mail only.

I’ve stopped leaving messages on cells; few people listen to them.

We can’t control how others communicate, but we can give our preferences to them. For example, I’ve asked my private patients and students to please leave time-related messages such as appointment changes on my land line voice mail only. I give out my cell phone number to very few. I love my work, but need breaks. Having my blue tooth speaker in my car blast on every two minutes is not recharging my batteries.

Your preferences might differ and that’s fine.

Preferences are not always chronologically related.  A 29 year old told me she asked her  friends, “instead of e mailing back and forth to set a lunch date, let’s just get on the phone and have a conversational.” YEA!

A 22 year old man told me, “I love my electronic devices but sometimes I wish I didn’t have them.”  EXACTLY!

Now if you’ll excuse me, I’m going to check my cell phone text messages and voice mails. Darn! I see my cell is dead. No problem. While it’s recharging, I’ll look at my computer e-mails, check my land line voice mails and sort through my postal mail.

Not just bills, I hope.
