This Memorial Day plan a “grill and chill” meal to celebrate a long ensured weekend and the makings of great new memories. America’s beloved hot dog in a bun~ just got a whole new look! Grill it, hot dog bun it and dress it up~ no oven required. I bet your outdoor area is lusciously green and in full bloom by now… hopefully so is the grill~ shined and squeaky clean~ ready for the summer lifestyle ahead. Easy to make and so delicious, I’m sure it’ll be a double dog day! You can also prepare, wrap while warm in heavy duty aluminum foil, stuff into an insulated lunch pack and head to the beach!  Remember this is the first of three summer weekends we get to extend our TGIF and enjoy the warm weather, friends, family and the privilege to relax! Start things off with a hot bang! Hot sausage grilled on a hot dog roll with caramelized onions, fresh chilled tomatoes and fresh basil combine together for a “wow” bite of Happy Holiday Weekend! Make it a day to remember and give thoughts and thanks to all those brave men and women that died in combat and to those that still serve~ facing danger to keep us safe. As we mark the beginning of our 2017 Summer~ let’s celebrate, reflect and remember!

Have a Hot Memorial Day! xoxo Denise

Spring Makeup Trends 2017

Rachael Severino is a 10th grade student at Sachem North High School in Sachem School District. This aspiring writer has a knack for the written word. She has penned short stories, poetry and is
developing an impressive body of work.
Now that the weather is getting warmer, new makeup trends have begun to pop up, offering lighter and brighter options for the new found sun and heat, along with dramatic looks designed just for spring.
Possibly the most popular [and talked about] look is the reverse smoky eye or watercolor eye. Rather than having a heavy, dark effect, this look brightens your eyes with the use of soft, light colors-perfect for the spring!
Ombre lips have been a long time coming, with beloved celebrities wearing this look on and off the red carpet. The look is young, fresh, and incredibly easy to recreate. Along with ombre lips, two-tone lips have become increasingly popular and can be as extreme or as simple as you like. Many are wearing this runway look that is typically created with one red lip and one coral, creating a bright and playful look. Glitter lips is another trend, offering a chic look worn by many of the performers and attendees at Coachella. To achieve the look, pat your lips with a fine or chunky glitter while your lipstick or lip gloss is still wet.
Glitter is very popular this season for more than just lips. Wear it as highlight or coat your eyebrows for other well-worn looks from Coachella. Keep in mind that the glitter-based looks will result in a more dramatic effect. A dialed down option is a sparkling eyeshadow or a bit extra highlight.  Soft shimmer works well with spring fashions and is quite popular this season.
If glitter is not your style, consider an ultimate, but tasteful, amount of gloss. This season, you will see the addition of gloss to eyelids and cheekbones to create a dewy, youthful look.
Make up for spring is lighter to accommodate the new, warmer temperatures. For people who adore darker eye looks, fear not. There is a way to achieve that level of autumn smokiness without the weight. Dark eyeshadow gloss is available from most cosmetic lines to create weightless, smudgy eyes.
Everything about spring is soft. Try a natural look with a touch of soft-colored eyeshadow. For a simple, clean look, try a bit of concealer, liquid highlight, and filled in brows. You will create a natural, dewy look perfect for the season. Want a touch more color? Add some extra pink by draping your blush (high on your cheekbones) with a soft eyeshadow and lipstick. This simple, but youthful look will have you feeling fantastic. Lastly, makeup fanatics are wearing soft greens around their eyes. If you want a little pow for your make-up palette, this will surely do the trick.
Enjoy the warmth and the fun, new looks that come with it!

What Professional Chefs Prefer

Bill Lauto is an Environmental Scientist and Energy Consultant who has been teaching how we can save our money, energy, environment, and health, since 1982. Mr. Lauto operates GoingTrueGreen.com and his work has been published in magazines such as: Consumer Report, Kiplinger's Financial and Business Ethics.

Have you ever stressed out because you will be cooking for a party or holiday event with all your friends or every family member at your house? Then on top of that, there will be the energy cost to cook the food!

Yes, large electric and gas bills can arrive just one month after the party or celebration ended. This is a fact for when your house is the "Culinary Capital" to everyone you know.

To make these joyous events less stressful, we all should take note of what professional chefs prefer when they are cooking. With this information, cooking will be: easier, faster, more reliable, and the energy bills will be much lower.

Two main cooking elements are preferred by professional chefs, however, you may not necessarily have them at this current time in your house. Nevertheless, learning these additional details and facts may prove helpful in the future for yourself and when sharing what you know with others.

First preference by pro chefs is a gas flame. Especially for the stove top cooking. A gas flame, unlike a burner for an electric stove, is controllable and all chefs "want" control. Adjusting the gas flame for the size of the pot and the food you are cooking will control the heat distribution. This feature will allow you to cook evenly, faster and embolden the taste of your food. In addition, you will consume less Natural or Propane gas, thus saving energy and keeping your cost to cook much lower.

Convection ovens are professional chefs' preferred oven because of faster and more even baking. They will even go as far as stating that the food has a more delicious taste. In addition, due to the fan circulating the heated air throughout the oven, food will cook faster even when the oven is set at the usual temperature. So no matter where the food is placed in the oven… Top rack or bottom rack, in the front or toward the back – no problem. Your food will cook or bake evenly and faster. The "End Result" will be Lower Energy Bills!

So if and when you are in the market to buy a new stove top oven, look into the Convection Ovens with the circulation fans in the back. In addition, if you have gas available in your house, make sure you buy a gas stove top and oven. Avoiding the electric models will save you money and perhaps award you the title of Best Chef in the House!

Love After Divorce or Loss of a Loved One

Kathy Horowitz facilitates a monthly women’s writer’s group at the Life

Many of us believe, myself included, that we were meant to have “one true love” in our lifetime.  But the truth is that too often, marriages do not work out or a loved one suddenly passes away long before his or her time.  The grieving process for both divorce and loss of a loved one can take many years especially if it was a loving union.  For some, it may take a lifetime.  But wherever your path has taken you, never say never to begin a new relationship.
Freud said that we all want to be loved.  It is innate, what we human beings search for in our relationships whether they are platonic or romantic.  Everyone wants to be acknowledged, appreciated, and communicated with.  Nobody truly wants to “go it alone.”
It has been my experience, that after divorce, there is a pathway to finding a new and loving connection.  First, you have to be ready in order to begin a new relationship.  That is not to say that your grieving must be completed.  It is my belief that it never is, but that it does lessen over time.
Second, you have to be willing to put yourself out there and ask the universe for what you want.  You cannot leave yourself closed to the opportunity for love if that is what you are searching for.  You must leave yourself open to it.
Third, you have to decide the most comfortable way for you to meet that new someone.  Whether it be a specific dating website www.eharmony.com, a meet-up www.meetup.com or a widow and widower’s bereavement group www.syjcc.org, a singles group www.7-in-heaven.com or if you are lucky enough to be introduced to someone by friends or family, the door to love, I believe, is always open.  Don’t be afraid to knock on it once or twice.
I met my partner at a singles bowling event three years ago.  Accompanied by a friend who was also going through a divorce, I was ready to bolt out the door when I saw a group of men and women gathered around the alleys.  I admit that although I was ready to find love, I was still somewhat wary of the “game of it” again.  But my friend persuaded me to stay and, as they say, the rest is history.  We’ve been together ever since.
When you’re ready, don’t be afraid to take that first step.  You’re not alone on this path as there are many others like you.  And you may be pleasantly surprised by whom you may meet.

Is It Just Me, Or Has The World Gone Mad?

Maria DiGiorgio is a lifelong New Yorker, who currently resides in Commack, with her family.  She is a devoted wife and mother, an educator and designer. Maria is active in her community, as a PTA mom and Girl Scout leader.  She has a passion for interior decorating and loves to garden. She is an avid reader, and enjoys writing about life experiences and parenthood, as well as her personal observations about the world around us.
There’s nothing like a difference of opinion to make one feel old or out of touch. The problem is, I’m the ONE! Although I wasn’t born a hundred years ago, I may as well have been, since the times have changed that significantly, since I was a kid. Just about everything is different in the way people do things. I can’t help feeling that Rip Van Winkle and I are, somehow, kindred spirits.
When I was growing up, there were many children in my neighborhood.  We could walk out our front doors and down the block, across the street or even around the block, without the need for parental or adult supervision. Our parents knew where we were going, with whom we were spending time and the names, addresses, and phone numbers of the families we associated with. There was a feeling of being connected as a community, but also, as fellow human beings. People genuinely cared about our well being, and took an active role in helping shape the way in which we would conduct ourselves.
The notion of “play” was very imaginative.  There was no need for electronics (and other than stereos or eight-track/cassette players) there weren’t any to be had. The constant stimulation came from your imagination and the imaginations of the friends you actively engaged with. While necessity may be the “Mother of Invention”, resourcefulness, it could certainly be argued, is the “Mother of Creativity”. In order to have fun and keep from being bored, you had to come up with interesting and captivating things to do. Storytelling, via reading aloud or acting out familiar tales, gave new meaning to expressive play. Language and motion coupled to make a favorite story come alive. Yes, there were board games, dolls, toys of all sorts, but without imagination, they would not be very appealing. A child’s ingenuity was the secret ingredient.
Conversely, in today’s world, these notions have largely disappeared.  Parents have had to become social directors of sorts, arranging “playdates” or providing a place, in which our children can safely engage with one another. No longer are sidewalks or yards a viable option. We must be willing to open our homes, our kitchens, our very pocketbooks, in order to properly “host” one of these soirées.We must also be willing to socialize with the parents or caregivers of the children our children are socializing with, at the times in which they are meeting.  Waving from the front door or calling down the block (as our parents often did) is not considered proper decorum, these days. Alas, we can hearken back to days gone by, in choosing to get to know our neighbors, being involved in our children’s day-to-day activities (knowing their whereabouts, the people they are associating with, both in actual and virtual reality) and taking an active role in bringing imagination, creativity and resourcefulness into the day-to-day activities we engage in, both in play and work-related settings. We don’t have to settle for less, because it is in striving for more, that we can glean a glimmer or two of things the way they used to be, not even a hundred years ago!

The Hidden Benefit Behind Your Child’s Anxiety

Connie Henriquez is a Teen Life Coach who works with kids & teens who suffer from anxiety and common childhood insecurities. Her specialty includes teaching them how to be confident, happy, make better decisions and LOVE their LIFE in as little as 30 days (regardless of what they have experienced in their past). For more information check out StartLovingLife.com or call (516) 340-0378.

Stop listening to the naysayers implying something is wrong with your child. Nothing is wrong with your child. In fact, I am here to tell you…you have a very special child.
And no, I am not going to sell you on, “Each child is special and unique and blah, blah, blah.” Instead, I will tell you the truth that eludes most people who have no clue about how life works.
I know, because as a kid I had anxiety and it wasn’t until I was in my mid 20’s I figured out how to overcome anxiety and START LOVING LIFE.
Not only did I teach myself how to be happy but I also learned how to view life in a very different way. And guess what…It was a total game changer for me and it can be for your child as well.
Here’s why it’s important for you to know you have a very powerful child with more potential then you even realize. But your child needs to learn how to harness anxiety in the right way.
Because when anxiety is properly addressed, amazing things will start to happen.
You see…your child is a powerful focuser. Which means your child has the uncanny ability to focus in a stronger way than most adults. This is an amazing gift because in life, everything you create is a result of your thoughts and focused attention.
The problem lies in that your child has established a pattern of competing positive and negative thoughts (unknowingly of course) which has created: Big time emotional conflict, manifesting extreme highs and lows (sometimes for no reason at all). Combined with fear, emotional distress and insecurity, this is what causes anxiety.
Sound familiar? But the great news is…If your child learns to harness thoughts in a positive direction, utilizing the strong power of focus, your child will start thinking positively about everything (regardless of outside negative influences or situations).
Imagine…Your child finally feeling: happy, confident and excited about life!?? Don’t allow your child to suffer from all those negative emotions for no good reason.
Instead give your child the opportunity to transform anxiety from a negative experience into a positive, life changing calling and understand: the power of positivity.

Teach your child that… “With a positive perspective in life, you can achieve anything.” Start Loving Life®

Vancouver

Vancouver is a city to be loved. From the moment you fly into this charming city located in British Columbia, you’re sold on it. A seaport oasis, surrounded by lush mountains – this place truly offers something for everyone. One of the most astounding food scenes I’ve come across in years, live music, theater, comedy, art, and a surplus of outdoor activities – they’ve got it all.
As if it couldn’t get any better, Vancouver has one of the most ethnically diverse populations in the world, and the people are insanely friendly. I mean it’s almost unnerving how friendly they are. Ranked “Top 5 Most Livable Places in the World” and “Top 10 Cleanest Cities in the World”, the streets of Vancouver are immaculate and the culture is unparalleled.
I was lucky enough to stay downtown during my quick three day visit. Located just a swift walk from Stanley Park, Vancouver Art Gallery, Convention Centre and Robson Street, the location was prime. Although I was consumed with work during the day, I used the afternoons and evenings to explore the area. The city is small, and most sights are within walking distance.
Reminiscent of Europe, this city provides an air of nostalgia, with awe-inspiring sights available for your viewing pleasure just around familiar street corners. During a brisk afternoon walk, I saw the water from a distance and decided to venture out for a photograph. Located adjacent the Cruise Ship Terminal, I found a small pub and was greeted with a blanket and a Guinness. I looked out onto the mountains and spent some time writing and simply admiring the view. This afternoon will remain as one of my favorite travel moments to date, simply because of the surrounding beauty and solitude.
After conversing with the waitress, I was on my way to explore ‘Gastown’, a recommended neighborhood for food and drink. Located between Granville and Main, this picturesque area is filled with restaurants, breweries, bars, shops and more. I retuned to Gastown three times during my visit and each time experienced excellent meals (poutine, fresh fish, smoked meats and more!), met unforgettable people and fell more in love with the culture.
There’s something almost indescribably captivating about this place. I’m not sure if it stems from the friendly folk or the quality expressed in everything from food to music – but it is a city that I would urge each and every one of you to visit. Whether you’re looking for an outdoor retreat, a killer music scene or some incredible foodie finds, Vancouver is the city for you. Run, don’t walk.

A Bachelors in communications and marketing, years of experience in the garment district, she celebrates everyday with enthusiasm for fashion and beauty while helping other women achieve their personal best. Collettep24@yahoo.com
Christine A. Guarino, RDH, CMF, CFM, founder of A World of Pink, is taking breast aftercare to new heights. “As someone who has been in the healthcare field for over 25 years as a dental hygienist, I have seen what women go through when fighting their battle with breast cancer. The idea for A World of Pink came to me when I discovered the drastically high number of cases of invasive breast cancer diagnosed every year—especially here on Long Island—and asking myself When these women are done with their surgery and treatment, what then? That was when I started researching aftercare and discovered that there simply was none, until now.” In just over two years, Christine has successfully launched two locations, partnered with esteemed doctors and healthcare professionals. She began working in tandem with many area hospitals and the Stony Brook Cancer Center.
A World of Pink is a healthcare facility specializing in bra and prosthesis fittings for women who have undergone breast surgery. They’re offering prosthesis for the closest match to patient’s skin tone, revolutionizing silicon filler for all women, and changing breast aftercare one fitting at a time.
Beautiful Brassieres is A World of Pink’s charity event that supports, A World of Pink Foundation, Stony Brook Cancer Center, American Cancer Society, and Remember Betty. Incredible bra art created by survivors, advocates, doctors, and generous sponsors have really tapped into their creative juices with stunning pieces.
From the moment upon entering the venue, the energy was intoxicating. The red carpet led me into a stunning room with more than a view, but rather a space filled with hope and promise. Beautifully trimmed with love and passion, every bra told its own story. Each gracious, sporty, flirty or whimsical bra was auctioned off with nail-biting excitement. Ralph Macchio, New York Jet: Erik Coleman, Victoria’s Secret model: Lindsay Ellingson, TV host: Donna Drake, were just a few of the incredible sponsors of these ornamental bras. The other guests and patients created artwork out of the brassieres that inspired all and raised fifteen thousand dollars. Volunteers from the Stony Brook Seawolves basketball team even extended a lending hand throughout the evening.
Christine’s mission statement: “My dream of changing breast after care forever, helping women feel beautiful, confident and balanced following all types of breast surgery.” Furthermore, “We work based on appointment and bill most insurance companies, and our 501(c)(3) organization, A World of Pink Foundation, is dedicated to providing women who cannot afford their items or who do not have insurance with neccessary aftercare resources.”
The progress this has made for aftercare and how vastly important it is to have this conversation with our daughters, sisters, mothers, grandmothers, girlfriends, and together we will support and lift. There is now a beautiful safe place to land, A World of Pink.

It’s beautiful outside~ get out! Take to the porch or patio by…PIE! With a delicious antipasto pizza pie. I love Friday nights as the work week draws to an end… time to celebrate the full weekend~ “ahoy” Prepare something easy, delicious, and nutritious ~that pairs so well with that glass of wine and the “exhale!” Think of the pizza crust as a blank canvas beholding countless possibilities~ including all your culinary delights. That disk of dough is the perfect platform to showcase your favorite foods, oils, spices, herbs as well as nutritional daily values. Skip the delivery~ create this yourself at home. On Friday nights in the warmer months when the sun shines longer~ I love to start my weekend with this quick and easy pie, a couple of good friends, the porch and a chilled glass of wine. Bake for 6 minutes or until golden brown and crisp in a hot 500 degree oven. Now tackle with your favorite antipasto ingredients, I use fresh mozzarella, salami, hard Italian sausage, marinated mushrooms, red roasted pepper, assortment of sliced hard Italian cheese (pecorino Romano, provolone, fresh arugula, fresh basil, sliced fresh tomatoes, (can use grilled vegetables~ eggplant, zucchini etc.), or “Greek” it up with feta cheese and olives, pepperoncini. Many people have a mental image of themselves as a poor soul tossed like a dry leaf in the malevolent winds of life. Nothing could be further from the truth. Struggling and straining to get power isn’t necessary. We already have it, built in, more than we can possibly imagine. Relax. All we need do is remove some obstacles so the power within us can come forth.

Movies were made about a school community in Canada, one of hundreds of rehab centers for young people in the delinquent and drug scenes. They have or had an unheard of success rate of 90%. Their secret: They tell/told these street kids they’re “Upright, Beautiful and Perfect”

With some necessary controls at first, they treated them as if this were so. After awhile those kids came to believe it, to act the part, then to convince the newcomers that it’s true of them as well.  Magic!

We too are “Upright, Beautiful and Perfect” Then why is the world, many individual lives, families and partnerships, in such turmoil?

There is one law to remember. Not many…just one. It’s that sooner or later the choices that we make in thought and deed determine what happens in our life.

We can choose to tell ourselves every day, “I am Upright, Beautiful and Perfect”  Mentally repeat it, believe it, then step up to the plate with it through our actions. It’s magic!

And through thoughts, actions and words, convey to our significant other, our children, our relatives and friends, that they are Upright, Beautiful and Perfect as well. I’m not suggesting that we stick our heads into the sand, ignoring poor behavior in others. However, with some practice we can bring the good in others and in ourselves into sharper focus and soften the focus on the faults. It’s magic.

“I am Upright, Beautiful and Perfect”  “You are Upright, Beautiful and Perfect”  “We are Upright, Beautiful and Perfect. ”Mentally repeat it, believe it, finally step up to the plate with it through our actions. Then sit back, relax, and watch the magic happen!

Thank you for being Upright, Beautiful and Perfect” and for allowing me into your life in this way.

Summer Is Coming… Are You Ready?

While it may be too late to begin a major project since Memorial Day kicks off the summer season of entertaining, it’s not too late to make a plan, and there are still many quick fixes that can inspire you to change your ways.  If you do something every day for 30 days, it becomes a habit.  Start developing some good habits that reduce the chaos and stress in your life and you will enjoy your summer guilt-free.
    So let’s get it together!
    • Start with today – Do whatever it takes to keep up with the daily laundry, dishes, mail, bills etc. and do it first thing before the day outside becomes too inviting.  Try getting up a half hour earlier so you don’t feel deprived.
    • Use that barbeque event you planned for your friends and family as a deadline for cleaning up and organizing your public spaces. Change burned our light bulbs, fix that leaky faucet, and get rid of the pile of old flowerpots and other trash on your porch and patio.  If it’s worn, torn or broken, either fix it or toss it.
    • Set aside the next rainy day as a project day.  Instead of going shopping, commit to cleaning out your closet and then reward yourself by buying something new that you really need.  By the way, when was the last time you wore that “70’s” jacket or size 6 evening gown?
    • Since you can un-clutter a drawer or counter top in about 15 minutes, why not do it while watching T.V.? Think you can’t do two things at once?  Commercials are great for sorting.  Try it.
    • Spend five minutes picking up five things and putting them away. Remember you don’t have to keep all five.
    • Planning a car trip or taking frequent visits to the beach or sports outings?  Get a storage bin for your trunk and keep maps, folding chairs, beach blanket, first aid kit, etc. at the ready and not cluttering up the garage.
    • Organize your summer sports gear NOW – before your outings, so you’re good to go without last minute stress.
    • Think before you bring home souvenirs from your vacation.  Keep a journal or photo album instead, or put it on a disc if you are going digital.
    • Summer reading is great fun.  Pass along the books you’ve read to friends. Keep only what you really want to reference or re-read or- are you an e-reader person?
    • While kids are out of school, help them get organized by creating clutter free zones, rules of the house regarding toys in certain rooms, organizing baskets for toys, games, books, puzzles etc.  When things are in order, reward yourselves and them by using the extra time for family fun.
    • Feel good about periodic purging.  The useable things you don’t need can help other families have a better summer season, as well.
