Love Is A Many Splendored Thing

Maria DiGiorgio is a lifelong New Yorker, who currently resides in Commack, with her family.  She is a devoted wife and mother, an educator and designer.  She has a passion for interior decorating and loves to garden. She is an avid reader, and enjoys writing about life experiences and parenthood, as well as her personal observations about the world around us.

Love is the most powerful emotion on Earth! It is incredibly complex and deeply layered, and yet, it can be so simple and automatic, we can feel it without much thought.  Love can grow and deepen over time or it can seemingly spring upon us in an instant, as when we set eyes on a potential soulmate or a newborn child. It is the very emotion that drives the human race – that is literally and figuratively the impetus for all creation.
To love and to be loved are the singular most desired achievements of any human being. What is life without love? All goodness, kindness, and charity stems from love. Sacrifice, perseverance and dedication stem from love. The need to do more and be more for others, to be the very best version of ourselves, stems from love.
People feel love in countless ways, to varying degrees and at different times throughout their lives. We love our partners, family and friends. We love our pets and homes. We love our jobs and hobbies. We love spending time with people we care about, or spending time in quiet contemplation. We love to travel or stay home and garden. The very term: “love” is used so often in our world, we sometimes completely forget the depth of its very meaning. Love is enormously transformative, taking on not just a multitude of forms, but also a multitude of intensity in emotion. Sometimes, love can be fleeting and at other times, it can endure for a lifetime. It can ebb and flow as we grow and evolve, or it can remain steadfast in its potency.  One thing remains certain: To live is to love and to love is to live!
Love is evident in all living things. We see it in nature. We see it across the globe, in places so distant and as close as our own backyards. We see it in infants, toddlers, teens and mature adults. We feel it at all times in our lives, from different sources and manifestations. When we witness love in its purest state, we are moved to reflect upon and evaluate our own intentions.
Giving and receiving love should always be for the betterment and elevation of those involved. It should be life affirming and sustaining. It should be given and received with reverence and the understanding that something profound and genuinely awesome has transpired between and within us, for love is truly a splendorous thing!

A Healthy Alternative To Long Island’s Water!

E-Healthy Water
A Healthy Alternative To Long Island’s Water!

We all know that water is the center to good health. Since we lose water constantly through breathing, sweating and digestion, it is critical to keep our bodies hydrated. Water gives life to the cells, organs and tissues in our body and helps regulate its temperature and maintain other bodily functions.
Knowing the importance of water and understanding the difference between the quality of water that we consume is equally important. E-Healthy Water, located at 203 Commack Road, Commack, has taken the consumption of water to a whole new level. After speaking to the owner, it’s clear, that healthier drinking water begins with finding the right pH balance, ingredient base, chemical composition and much more.
E-Healthy Water, has revolutionized the way people think about hydration and the nutrients that go into our bodies. At E-Healthy Water, they have discovered a way to transform ordinary tap into hydrating, alkaline water. After many studies that have been done on the subject, it has been determined that Alkaline Ionized water provides our bodies with more energy and healthier skin.
With the help of the Kangen Water Machine, E-Healthy Water’s cutting edge technology has successfully transformed tap into alkaline water. Using charged electrode plates and an ion-permeable membrane, the technology divides water into alkaline and acidic halves. Eventually, the mineral ions including calcium carbonate and magnesium are separated from the bicarbonate ions. Once separated, the combination of ions with H2O creates an alkalinized water known as, Kangen water.
Their Kangen water not only rids the body of unnecessary waste but also strengthens the body’s immune system. While used for multi-purposes such as drinking, cooking and cleaning, Kangen water even enhances the body with the right amount of vitamins and minerals needed.
With the countless benefits Kangen water has to offer, you will soon feel and see the difference. From a b—etter balance in pH, increased hydration and increased blood oxygenation levels, Kangen water supplies it all.
To learn more about creating a healthier you, visit www.mypurplewater.com or stop on in to our new Commack location. Also, receive a FREE 32. Oz. Prepping your Home for Sale

Jill McDowell is Licensed Real Estate Salesperson at Daniel Gale Sothebys International Realty in Smithtown and Former News 12 Reporter/Anchor Jill Conway.     Selling a home isn’t just putting a for-sale sign in the front yard and waiting for buyers to come make an offer. It takes expert marketing and a little elbow grease. Homeowners should start preparing for a home sale several weeks or months prior to putting their own on the market.
While it’s cold outside, you should look at sprucing up the interior. I often suggest taking photos of your home with your camera or cell phone so you can get an idea of what it looks like from a camera lens and what jumps out at you. Maybe it’s a painting on a wall that’s too large or a piece of molding that sticks out. It’s difficult for some homeowners to see their home from a buyers’ perspective. Therefore, taking a picture may help you see your home with a more critical eye; allowing you to make necessary changes that enhance your home’s interior.
Sometimes it’s very simple- a fresh coat of paint can go a long way and completely make over a room.  A hot trend continues to be gray rooms and I always suggest Stonington Gray by Benjamin Moore.  In my opinion, it’s the perfect shade of gray- not too blue or green and it’s a neutral color that many of my clients who are first time home buyers absolutely love.
Here are some other tips I’ve put together that may help get the most money for your home…
    •  Check the doorbell! If it’s not working properly, replace it or secure it to the wall.
    •  Mailbox- Take a good look at the mailbox. It’s something we tend to overlook because we drive or walk past it without a thought. Is it old, rusty, barely upright?
    •  Doormat- This is an inexpensive and quick fix. A pretty doormat is the first step into your home.
    •  Lighting- Make sure all lights have working bulbs, if a switch doesn’t work, hire a professional to see what the issue is.
    •  Door knobs/handles- Tighten any loose handles or wiggling knobs on cabinets, drawers and doors.
    •  Fix any gaps or holes in the walls or doors.
    •  Organize closets- You might love or absolutely loathe the idea but take a good look in your closets. Buyers open closet doors!
    •  Set the dining room and/or kitchen tables! Prepare for dinner guests and add a nice centerpiece.
    •  Shower Curtains- Throw out old, ugly, stained shower curtains. You can replace it with a simple, inexpensive one for a clean look.
    •   Take out the trash- Before every showing, take out the trash if there’s something smelly from last night’s dinner
Start thinking about anything you might want to take with you when you move out. These items need to be told to the real estate agent beforehand. Want Grandma’s chandelier? The bedroom drapes match your comforter? It would be best if you just took them down and replaced them before you list your home.  Any questions? Feel free to contact me!

Chicago:City of Architectural and Historic Wonder

Kathy Horowitz facilitates
a monthly women’s writer’s group at the Life Center in Huntington. Her work has appeared in The Long
Islander, Long Island Woman, Calyx, Blue
Unicorn, and Seventh Quarry. Kathy offers freelance writing, editing, and proofreading services. (kahorowitz@gmail.com) www.kathyhorowitz.com.

We were in Chicago during the New Year’s holiday for my son and now daughter-in-law’s wedding.  The evening was remarkable and so was, as we dis- covered, the city.  Nestled alongside Lake Michigan and marked by architectural wonders are Willis Tower (formerly Sears), the Hancock Building, the old Water Tower by the Magnificent Mile (high-end retail stores and restaurants), and contemporary buildings such as Marina City (corn-cob shaped mix-use complex). We couldn’t take in enough! Visit wheretraveler.com/chicago for more.
Bundled up, we walked with friends to Millennium Park where the Maggie Daley Park skating ribbon allows skaters to wind around the park.  To our left was the “Bean,” an architectural icon with a mirrored surface that reflects those walking in the park.  It’s a great photo-op!  We continued toward Navy Pier, which is host to Winter Wonderfest where exhibits, activities, stores, and restaurants as well as the Chicago Children’s Museum, and Shakespeare Theatre can be found. It’s also home to the Ferris wheel, invented in Chicago in 1893 for the World Fair.
Lincoln Park Zoo and the neighboring Conservatory are a treat for families (free admission).  Polar bears, penguins, gorillas, and monkeys will entertain you.  Afterwards take a quick walk to the Conservatory where the orchid and floral displays are akin to New York Botanical Garden, although on a smaller scale.
If you’re interested in the “mob scene,” take the Chicago Crime Tour, a bus tour with an excellent guide who explains the mob’s history with stories of the infamous Al Capone, John Dillinger, and others.  One of the stops is at Harry Caray’s restaurant (the late radio and TV announcer for the Cubs and White Sox, among others).  The walls are packed with dozens of pictures and newspaper articles, and the basement contains Frank Nitti’s safe (Capone’s top henchman) and underground tunnels once used as a mob getaway.  The second stop is at the Biograph Theatre where Dillinger was shot in a nearby alleyway.
A favorite site was the Chicago Cultural Center (1897), a landmark building which is the city’s official reception venue where Chicago’s Mayor has welcomed Presidents, royalty, diplomats, and community leaders.  Located in the Loop across Michigan Avenue from Millennium Park, the interior displays beautiful mosaics inscribed on the ceiling with the names and words of writers, poets, and philosophers as well as magnificent chandeliers.  Exhibits also run there and admission is free.
Have I mentioned (deep dish) pizza?  Here’s a list of the best (I’m told):  the original Uno’s, Lou Malnatti’s and Giordano’s (several locations), and Chicago’s Pizza.  Chicago is full of treasures to explore no matter the season.  It’s worth a “go!”

Your Resume Creates Your Future

Don Benenson, SPHR, is the owner of MVP Resumes. He has over 30+ years of corporate HR experience and happily helps clients with resume preparation and interviewing skills. He can be reached at 631-428-5877 or at
donaldbenenson@yahoo.com

It’s impossible for me to overstate the linkage between your resume and future success. Having spent over 30+ years in Corporate HR in sizeable organizations, I cannot begin to calculate how many resumes I’ve reviewed. Few were memorable, some were acceptable, and most were immediately forgettable.

There are quite a few documents in one’s life that will play a role in that person’s future success. However, few have more power to create that future than your resume.

As a professional resume writer and interview skills coach, here are the mistakes and blunders I see.

Minimal Language of Achievement and Contribution
Most resumes read like job descriptions and highlights what the individual crosses off the occupational to-do list. Recruiters and hiring managers read hundreds of resumes and nothing makes them sprint to the nearest Starbucks than boring entries that don’t answer the essential question. How might this applicant’s past achievements and contributions make my organization more successful? If your resume fails to have an abundance of compelling entries, it’s destined for the circular file!

Blowing the Glimpse Test
Before deciding to read someone’s resume, I would take a 5-10 second glimpse to see if the applicant had the core qualifications for the position. Applicants that failed this test were quickly eliminated. Start your resume with a professional summary section. It should highlight key qualifications and accomplishments that get the hiring manager envisioning you doing the job.

Here are some examples:
    • Skilled at turning around teams and departments with sub-standard performance
    • Able to manage a high volume workload requiring performance to demanding standards for quality and timeliness
    • Demonstrated achievements in customer retention and acquisition

The Failure to Understand That Less Is Really More
Your resume is not about how much is presented but rather, how powerful your entries are. Think about movies, songs and sayings where a powerful and concise statement is etched in your memory, such as “Failure is not an option” from the movie Apollo 13. In our hyper-involved lives where we seem to get distracted within seconds of starting, concise and powerful language should be the badge of honor on your resume.

Spacing Out on Sequencing
For all the jobs you have held, the first entry should be your “wow factor” and all that follows should be listed in decreasing wow power. Hiring managers want to
interview only a few applicants and it’s up to you to be one of the best of the best on paper. You’d be amazed by the number of resumes where the wow items were deeply buried in the resume and were easily overlooked.

Your resume can literally change your life and your
future. These actions will go a long way and will have hiring managers interested in interviewing you.

Trendy Shoes For Your Winter Wardrobe

Anna is currently a student
at Fairfield University. She doesn’t know what she wants to do with her life yet because her
possibilities are endless. Anna loves reading, the beach, and iced peach green tea lemonades!

With the start of the new year, it’s time for everyone to reflect and make changes or additions, so that this year is the best one yet. A lot of individuals use this fresh start as motivation for lifestyle, relationship, and even fashion changes. The winter months are the perfect time to make a style change due to trendy sweaters, hats, scarves, and, especially, shoes! Here are some of the most popular shoe trends to incorporate into your wardrobe this winter.

Thigh High Boots

Thigh high boots add an edge to any winter outfit this season. They come in a variety of colors and fabrics; making it one of the most versatile shoes to add to your wardrobe.  Whether you’re wearing a short dress or dark jeans, thigh high boots are the go-to shoe this winter.

Pointed-Toed Shoes

Pointed-toed shoes are another popular trend this season; whether it be heels or boots. In addition to giving any outfit a more polished look, pointed-toed shoes make any person’s legs look infinitely longer. They also fit perfectly with anyone’s style; whether you opt for a classic look or wear outfits straight off the runway.

Mules

Mules are a must-have item in any woman’s closet. These shoes have all the class and style of heels, but offer a more comfortable and casual look. Like pointed-toed shoes, mules are available in a variety of colors and styles to fit perfectly in anyone's closet.

Velvet Shoes

Nothing means winter is here quite like velvet coming back into style. Velvet heels and boots dress up any outfit, making it the perfect shoe for any party this season.

Pilot Checklist

Alysia Stern has been writing for years. She is the mother of teenage twins, a published children's book author, and a humanitarian. Her passion in life is feeding the homeless and helping our Veterans. Alysia is an activities coach for the local senior citizens and enjoys making them laugh TrendingNow247@gmail.com

If you’re not on social media you may be considered out of touch. I must admit, I have lost hours each week caught up in everyone else’s life on social media but my own. I would spend my entire lunch break scrolling through my friend’s extra curricular activities and food pictures. One day, I tried to figure out why I had no time to do certain things in my life. We all have eight hours of work, sleep, and free time. Why were my eight hours of, “free time” becoming more like three?
I started keeping a time journal. I wrote down everything I did in my eight hours and that’s when the light bulb went off. I gave away my day to social media. I wasted too many hours each week commenting on Joe’s steak dinners, Lila’s mountain climbing and Connie’s baby pictures. I recorded, edited and shared too many videos of my dogs. Seems innocent right? Well, truth be told, I was robbing myself of productivity and valuable time. I decided  that I wanted to make my three hours of free time eight again, so I became a pilot.
Before a pilot takes off on the runway, he/she makes a checklist. Pilots use checklists for: both (normal and non-normal) operations, routine situations,  malfunctions, and emergencies…pretty much for everything. I bought a notebook and recorded every move I made. After five days, I evaluated my energy and where I could improve to make more time for things. Once I figured out where I had been unproductive, I created a checklist to add structure to my malfunctions, strength to my routines, and peace to my emergencies.
My pilot journal started off daily at 6am with a cup of coffee and ten things that I was grateful for. Once I completed my gratitude exercises, I wrote my goals/checklist for the day and checked them off as they were completed. I was NOT allowed to go on social media until my goals were met. The more structured I was, I found that I had become a more productive, joyful and agile woman. I’d taken back the time that was lost and I was genuinely happier.
If you’re finding that, you too are losing valuable personal time, try a pilot’s checklist. Give yourself some power hours and keep track of your days. Then, create a strict checklist and complete it daily. Reward yourself only when your list is complete.  You’ll be amazed how an old school, black and white, speckled notebook can bring back sanity, joy and most of all…time.

T’was the first day of ‘nineteen
And all through the house
Clutter prevailed
No room for a mouse!

Holidays over and clean up
Was needed
Mom was a wreck
For she was not heeded

“Do as I say and clean
Up your room”
But they never saw Mom
Even lift up a broom!

This year will be different
Change in the air
Mom’s got a plan
That she’s carefully prepared

Each take a task, just one you can do
Make sure that you finish –
Just see it all through

Think of the power of one thing
That is done
Then the power of one can really
Be fun!

Do one shelf in the closet
One drawer in the kitchen
One white load of laundry
And soon you’ll be itchin’

To take on a new job
And find it rewarding
Soon you’ll be purging
No more of that hoarding

The house will be cleaner
With things in its place
Save time in the morning
No lost sock to chase!

So, start the new year
Without even an utter
Just make your own plan
And vow to de-clutter

A happier home
And a happier you
Will be on the horizon
For your family
And you!

Don’t Wait Don’t Hesitate Step up to the Plate NOW!

Dr. Gold, Ph.D, LMHC, Licensed and Board Certified Clinical MentalHealth Counselor, with a Ph.D in psychology, is in private practice at her home office in Fort Salonga, specializing in relationships and integrating traditional methods with holistic ones. She works with all type problems. She is a Life Coach, Workshop Leader, Lecturer, and published Author. Please contact her at drgold6@optimum.net.

“She is the most positive person in the world,” my son-in-law announced about me at an event. That’s an exaggeration, but only a slight exaggeration. (Joking!)  Kidding aside, I am known to be optimistic.
My story to follow may sound somewhat negative, but please know that is not my intention. My goal is to inspire  and hopefully save you from regret.
From the moment I met my husbands friends, Renee and Ron, I was very fond of them both. She being a nurse, and he an owner of a construction company; they’re nice people, have a good marriage, fun, intelligent; the sort we like to socialize with.
Even so, we got together only once due to four busy schedules. I’m sure we could have done so more often than that if only I had pursued. But I didn’t due to  a busy schedule. I know you can relate.
Recently we saw them again only for a sad occassion. Ron’s wake. He had passed suddenly of a heart attack at the age of 56.
    NOW I found time, right?!
My friend Jessica, a chiropractor, and I bonded the day that we met. Jessie was always a quiet person. She didn’t socialize like me. The only time I saw her was mostly in her office, but I didn’t mind. We had much in common including how much she liked the outdoors and advocating for sea animals.
One day, she surprised me and suggested, “If you get a break in your practice or I do in mine, let’s get in touch and take a walk on the boardwalk.”
I would have loved that.  I remember once a patient cancelled and I considered calling Jessie to see if she could make it.  Did I do so?  You guessed it.  I did not.  I don’t remember what I chose to do instead, which seemed important at the time. So important, that I don’t even remember it. After all, our offices were only 10 minutes apart. There would be another time, right?
    Wrong!
Then, I did see Jessie out of her office. In the hospital, with a very aggressive cancer. Her husband had told me she did not want visitors. But, I went anyway. I wrote a note, stating she didn’t have to see me if she didn’t feel up to it; one way or another we would be communicating. I handed it to the nurse to read to Jessie while I waited in the corridor outside the room. Soon, the nurse came over to me and asked me to come into the room.
A few days later, we were at her wake. Once again, NOW I found time, right?!
The above two incidents were approximately three years and one month ago. Respectively, they will be etched in my memory forever.
Of course most of us have work, families, and homes we tend to. It seems there is never enough time to get everything done.
Or, we decide not to contact a particular person because they do not reach out first. We always seem to be the one to have to do it. Enough already! Let her/him do it next time.
Do you know what?  Once, long ago, I felt that way but I no longer do. If I like the person and if when we’re together we both enjoy it, who cares who made the initial call, text or e-mail. So, we fail to call, e-mail or text (how much time would that take out of our lives really?) because, it can always wait. But, can it?
Of course, it is important to keep a clean and neat home; care for our children and perhaps, look after our relatives. And if we don’t tend to our work, who will?
Once, a wise older relative said to me, which I’ve never forgotten, and has become meaningful to me: “Your house will be here longer than you will be. Put people first.”
So, is there somebody you’ve been meaning to contact or see? If so, do it now. Step up to the plate. Don’t hesitate.YOU will be very glad that you made the first move.
I hope I’ve inspired you. With great affection, Dr. P-T Gold.
