An Acupuncturist Weighs in on Treating Summer Allergies

With the arrival of summer, many people eagerly embrace outdoor activities, enjoying the long-anticipated warm weather. However, for those living with seasonal allergies, this time of year can be more irritating than fun. Sneezing, sniffling, itchy eyes, and congestion can easily ruin a good time. Fortunately, there are ways to alleviate allergy symptoms and enjoy the summer to the fullest.

I sat down with Dr. Michelle Iona, DACM, L.A.c, who is a Doctor of Acupuncture and Chinese Herbal Medicine, a Functional Medicine Practitioner (IFM), and a Certified NADA Detox Specialist to discuss natural ways to treat seasonal allergies. Dr. Iona shared some of her favorite allergy-busting strategies, including supplements, foods, and avoidance techniques.

According to Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), a balanced diet is key to maintaining a strong immune system and minimizing allergic reactions. Dr. Iona shares that “70-80% of our immune system lies in our gut; addressing gut issues is the first line of defense when it comes to allergies.” She also mentions the importance of uncovering food sensitivities that may contribute to seasonal allergies.

To start, avoid inflammatory foods like dairy, sugar, processed foods, and greasy/fried foods, as they can exacerbate allergies. Alternatively, anti-inflammatory foods can help reduce pesky allergy symptoms. Foods containing omega-3 fatty acids like salmon, walnuts, and flaxseeds, are great choices. It’s also important to get a good amount of fruits and veggies in your daily diet. A healthy gut microbiome plays a crucial role in supporting a robust immune system. Using a high-quality probiotic supplement can help restore balance and reduce allergic reactions.

There is one supplement Dr. Iona highly recommends to her patients: D-Hist. This is a popular natural allergy relief supplement that has gained recognition for its efficacy in managing seasonal allergies. Its key ingredients include:

Quercetin: A natural flavonoid with powerful anti-inflammatory properties that helps stabilize mast cells and reduce the release of histamines, which are responsible for allergic reactions.

Stinging Nettle Leaf: An herb that has been used for centuries to relieve symptoms of allergies and contains compounds that block histamine receptors and reduce nasal inflammation.

Bromelain: An enzyme derived from pineapple that aids in the breakdown of mucus and supports respiratory health, providing relief from congestion.

Vitamin C is a natural antihistamine known for its immune-boosting properties that can reduce the severity of allergic reactions.

A saline solution can help clear nasal passages and remove allergens, reducing congestion and sinus irritation. Practicing stress management, at first glance, may not seem like an allergy solution, but Dr. Iona says that high-stress levels can worsen allergy symptoms. Incorporate relaxation techniques daily like meditation, deep breathing exercises, or gentle yoga to keep stress at bay.

You can support your immune system by making changes to your environment, too. Maintain a clean-living space by regularly dusting, vacuuming, and wiping surfaces to minimize allergens like dust mites and pollen.

When it comes to treating any condition, Dr. Iona says “Getting to the root cause of your symptoms is crucial. Each patient presents with different symptoms and constitution. Therefore their treatment plan should be tailored to address their specific symptoms and cause.”

Summer allergies shouldn’t hold you back from enjoying the outdoors. By incorporating supplements like quercetin and probiotics, consuming allergy-relieving foods, and avoiding common triggers, you can manage those annoying allergy symptoms. Remember, consulting with a healthcare professional is always recommended before starting any new supplements or making significant dietary changes. Dr. Iona has been practicing for 22 years, helping her patients reduce allergy symptoms. She states that the “combination of acupuncture and Chinese herbs is very effective at treating allergies and can help strengthen the body’s immune system. Patients often report that their sinuses open immediately during an acupuncture session.”

Summer Shoes ‘23

Feet help regulate the entire body’s temperature, and with the thermometer climbing steadily into the high 90s, ensuring you are wearing the right shoes is essential. Designers from the runway to the department store have focused on functionality and fun for this summer season. They understand their shoppers want to be comfortable and cool, while also feeling confident in a cute new pair of shoes.

Woven shoes have strut up and down the runway and now they can walk your daily route. This trend is applicable to any shoe, be it sandals or heels. Thick straps crisscrossing over each other give a basket like appearance. This structure makes the shoe breathable and unique.

If you find the thick bands of woven shoes to be too restrictive, shoes that are barely there are equally popular this season. This style is usually found on sandals or kitten heels. An evolution of the ‘10s gladiator sandals, this trend drawls on skinny straps, skinny heels, and hardly any fabric on the top of your foot.

Ballerina slippers have been on the verge of reemergence for years now. The preppy style of the 1980s has been surging during colder months with loafers and Mary Janes. Finally, this summer, the ballerina flat is back. Simple and clean, ballerina slippers are aesthetically romantic and feminine, and a perfect option for those not comfortable in heels or platforms.

For those seeking the extra height, wedges remain the summer heel of choice. Like ballerina flats, wedges are a continuation of the 1980s shoe craze. Wedges are power shoes, being a bolder, clunkier option than the stiletto. While many wedges are available in neutral tones, Gen Z has revamped the shoe with a certain flare – the shelves are full of brightly colored wedges in a plastic-like material, with floral appliques and glitter skins.

An understated, simpler option is the big, white sneaker. Commonly seen in street style inspiration photos, these sneakers are perfect for running errands and long days. The plain white keeps the foot cool and keeps with the summer visual of light pastels.

If white is too boring for you, brightly colored slides are hitting the shelves in equal measure. Another easy-to-wear option, these slides can be slipped on when running out the door and kicked off when you hit the beach. The bright colors and embellishments make them visually fun and exciting, a real eye catcher.

When shopping for your newest summer shoe, pick out the pair you will be most excited to wear. Remember what your closet looks like, and know what your feet can tolerate. A shoe tree crammed full of shoes you never bother with is depressing. Trust your judgement, and strut forth!

Vacation Essentials

With summer fast upon us, you might have your annual vacation booked and ready. Beach resorts, backpacking, and city sight-seeing are all uniquely rewarding and emotionally nourishing. Getting prepared to go, however, can be stressful. Double checking you have your passport and phone charger, making sure there’s a full tube of sunscreen, it can be overwhelming. Ensuring your bag is properly packed can eliminate a bulk of the stress.

Toiletries are in everyone’s bag! Consider picking up a toiletry bag to keep all your mini bottles organized and in one place. This will make for a more seamless packing and unpacking process. There are elaborate toiletry bags, that unfold into wall-hanging organizers and there are simple pouches with pockets. They come cheap on Amazon or at luxury pricing from any of your favorite designers.

Comfortable shoes! If you plan on exploring the wilderness, invest in sturdy hiking boots. Wear them around while running errands for a few days before your trip to break them in and so you know these are definitely the right shoes for your feet. For a beach get away, new flip flops or sandals to match your outfits. If you want a little extra support in your flip flops, look for those with cork-bottoms or those made out of yoga mat foam. Aching feet should not be a concern on vacation.

Consider investing in a reusable water bottle. Not only is this useful for travel, it’s also good for everyday. Traveling during the summer means you will likely be out in the sun and moving around. You don’t want to accidentally dehydrate, especially not in a foreign country where you may not speak the language or have insurance. Popular travel destinations anticipate this lack of preparedness and will price gouge bottles of water. Having a lightweight water bottle on hand will save you money and keep you hydrated.

Unless you plan on visiting a country or state during their dark months, a chic, sturdy pair of sunglasses is an absolute must. Wanting to keep harsh glare out of your eyes is a given, especially while on vacation, where you might be exploring or sprawling out in the sun. Regardless of your vacation type, travel involves a lot of moving around. You are going to want a pair of sunglasses that will not snap at the slightest bit of pressure. Go to a store and feel the pairs you want before buying them.

A film camera! Recently rising in popularity again, film cameras are cheap and easy to pack in both your luggage and your regular bag. Having one on hand is a great way to capture memories with high quality. These cameras cast the photos in a cozy film, giving an almost vintage look. A physical copy of pictures you’ve taken is a great keepsake to reflect back on later.

Pack wisely to best enjoy your time away! You want to look back on your vacation fondly, so take what you need and capture those memories!

Summer Skin Care: Glow Naturally with Healthy Skin

Skincare Woman Washing Face Foaming Soap Scrubbing Skin. Face Wash Exfoliation Scrub Soap Woman Wash

Everything seems to shine during the summertime. Trees in bloom, the gleam of the sun on the water, and the dew-kissed look of healthy skin glowing from a sustainable summertime skincare routine.

Just as we look forward to shedding layers of clothing as the temperature rises, lightening up makeup and skin care seems a bonus of summer. That does not mean, however, skimping on sun protection or moisture. Let’s look at the must have items for protecting your skin and looking your best during the summer months.

Always begin your day with a good cleanser. If your skin is holding on to dirt and oils under the outer layer, the rest of your routine simply cannot do its best. Micellar water is a current favorite among cosmetologists and dermatologists alike for removing remnants of the day from your face. As with all parts of your routine, choose a cleanser designed for your skin type and maturity. With the veil rising on the taboo of talking about menopause, companies large and small are creating products for women with mature skin, understanding that their needs are important, and they often have greater resources to spend on themselves in this phase of life.

After cleansing, apply toner to close the pores and prep for serum and moisturizer. For the summer months, Vitamin C serum is a great option as is one of the latest hot products, Pataua oil. Loaded with Vitamins E and A, as well as oleic acid and amino acids, it provides skin-firming benefits with a light feel on the skin.

No matter the season, moisturizer is a must. Choose a hydration-boosting product that will keep your skin feeling dewy and refreshed without feeling oily from heat and humidity. Give a hyaluronic acid enriched formula a try for a product that draws from the water from humid air to bring extra moisture to your skin. Some women opt for a summer moisturizer that adds light tint to skip foundation. Whichever you choose, be sure to select an option with SPF to protect against the sun’s harsh rays. This is a must for every age and skin type.

Eye and neck/décolleté creams are critical this time of year. The delicate eye areas need a little added attention to ensure summer squinting doesn’t take a toll. A good pair of UVA/UVB blocking sunglasses, while not truly part of your skincare, will go a long way. And adding neck cream to your routine at a young age will help avoid that being the area that gives away your age as you mature.

Keep your skin care in an easily accessible space so that you can readily get to each product, lessening the chances of skipping a step. Like anything else that is good for you, your skincare routine should become habit. Think of it as one small, yet important, component in your overall wellness.

This time of year, opt for lightweight but moisture-rich products to give your skin the natural, healthy glow that is the trademark of summer. When your skin feels good, you look good …and you’ll know it from the inside out. Let yourself shine with healthy summertime skin.

Step Out of Your Comfort Zone and Love Yourself First: Unlocking the Hidden Benefits

Life Begins At The End Of Your Comfort Zone. Text On Wooden Blocks With Nature Background. Motivatio

Are you tired of the same ole, same ole? Do you feel like you want a change but don’t know how? If so, you are in luck! As a teen life coach and founder of the lifestyle brand Start Loving Life® I am here to remind you that the NUMBER ONE thing you can do today is: START LOVING YOURSELF! I know, that sounds cheesy and simple. I get it! BUT that really is the answer.

Most people don’t love themselves. They just don’t. Instead, they are hard on themselves and are their own worst enemies. And the bad part is, most people don’t even realize they are doing it.

That’s why any time I talk about going “outside your comfort zone” it always begins with self-love. Because the kicker is this – the only reason you aren’t going outside your comfort zone is because you are too darn hard on yourself, which means you lack the confidence to even try OR the self-esteem to think you can! Isn’t that just crazy!?

So, what do you need to do? You want to start becoming more aware of the thoughts you are thinking about yourself. Are you focused on your positive qualities or your negative ones? Do you look in the mirror and focus on your GORGEEEE eyes or the line between your brows? This is SUPER IMPORTANT because your self-love fuels your self-esteem. It’s your self-esteem that gives you the confidence and belief in yourself to know that you are worthy of more. BUT not only that, it gives you the drive to go after it – not just sit around hoping and wishing but instead actually doing!

How does self-love help you to step out of your comfort zone?

  • Personal Growth: when you love yourself, you feel good. It’s that plain and simple. When you feel good you want to achieve more.
  • Increased confidence: when you love yourself, you discover the confidence and the FUN in trying new things.
  • Overcome fear: when you love yourself, you know there is no such thing as fear! Fear is nothing more than thinking something bad is going to happen, which is focusing on the negative. Why not focus on the good that can happen from putting yourself out there! What a concept right?
  • Enhanced Creativity: when you love yourself, the possibilities are endless. Your mind opens up to all the ways you can do more, be more and have more. You will begin to use your imagination for good, BIG DREAMS (not evil, LOL, like doubt, fear, and worry!).
  • Resilience: when you love yourself and try new things you become better at adapting to new experiences. The more you expand your experiences outside your comfort zone the easier it will become! And the more life will be FUN for you!
  • Bigger Network: when you love yourself, you feel good about yourself on the inside, which means you will be more comfortable and social around others. You will be in the perfect position to attract other like-minded peeps, expand your social network, and be more open to success!

Remember, life begins where your comfort zone ends! So don’t waste another minute, second guessing yourself or staying plain ole stuck! The world is waiting for you to take your first step towards loving yourself and your life! Now is the time!
