Sustainable Fashion

The newest trend in fashion is sustainability.

With styles overturning one day to the next, fashion brands thought they had figured out the best way to maintain momentum. Sending manufacturing to developing countries, utilizing their cheap labor and quick construction, while keeping costs down and profits up.

Creating what is now known as “Fast Fashion.”

One of the most popular “Fast Fashion” brands today is Shein. Their ability to mass produce clothes at low prices is astounding to most, but a bit distasteful when you realize how. According to Business Insider, Shein workers are paid less than 4 cents for every low quality garment they produce. They work 18 hour days and 75 hour weeks. This enables their company to sell trending styles at such low prices.

The mass production of clothes has an unethical and serious impact on workers and our environment.

Manufacturing factories release C02 and other greenhouse gasses polluting the air we breathe. But the air isn’t the only thing that our clothes are polluting. The fashion industry is one of the largest water consumers in the world. It takes about 7,000 liters of water to make a single pair of jeans, polluting fresh waterways with toxic chemicals.

Not to mention that most mass produced clothes are made from nylon, spandex and polyester. These very cheap materials are not grown naturally, and take almost 200 years to decompose when discarded.

As the world is becoming a more environmentally conscious place, the fashion industry is starting to trail behind it. Brands like Patagonia and Levis have been making changes toward sustainability that consumers are flocking to.

Sustainable fashion embodies conscious fashion. Clothes that are made eco-friendly, are locally sourced, mindful of workers conditions and wages, recycled or upcycled.

The best part of the fashion industry is that it is consumer driven. As more consumers buy from companies that are mindful of the way their clothes are produced and sold, more clothing brands will change their production method.

The way consumers purchase clothes can also support the movement.

Thrifting clothes, or swapping an old pair of jeans is a great way to get new pieces while supporting the cause. Doing this eliminates the large amount of clothes that contributes to waste piles.

Sabrina Macchio, the founder and designer of By Sabrina Jade says, “Purchase pieces that you can and will wear again. It’s truly not about the amount of pieces of clothing you own, it’s how you style those pieces.”

Macchio practices what she preaches and is building her brand respectively.

Her main focus is everyday, day-to-night, and seasonless fashion to ensure her customers get the most out of her high-quality products.

The young designer has made sure that she partners with manufacturers that share her same agenda. She says “The must haves are: Ethical working conditions, minimal environmental impact, and slow fashion model.” These characteristics separate quality brands from fast fashion brands.

As a consumer, pay attention to companies that are transparent about their production processes and practice conscious fashion.

Staying Safe from TICKS This Summer

May is Lyme Disease Awareness Month and while you may be thinking you are usually careful, you might want to think again. In 2021, the CDC shared that “approximately 476,000 Americans are diagnosed and treated for Lyme disease” each year. It seems that the number of ticks carrying the disease increases annually and in 2021, Fox 5 reported that on Long Island and in Connecticut, a whopping 56% of ticks carried the disease. This is a health risk for both people and pets.

So how can you keep yourself safe from the dreaded tick bite? First, you must arm yourself with knowledge. You’ll find ticks in the grass, as in your own backyard, and in wooded areas. If you are a gardener, camper, hunter, or just enjoy the outdoors, you are likely to come across ticks. Make sure that when enjoying time outdoors, you wear light-colored clothing, so that you see the ticks more easily. You can also use a repellant on your shoes and clothing, and there are many options available, both chemical and organic.

Make sure to brush your clothes off before you enter your home, and take a shower, checking your body for any ticks that may have slipped under your clothes.

Treating your outdoor home area is another way to help avoid a tick bite. There are, again, both chemical and organic treatments that you can hire a company to spray or that you can do yourself. The same goes for your pets. You’ll want to treat them with a preventative of some sort, which you can get from your vet or pet store. It’s important to check your pet for ticks daily during peak seasons, the warmer months, even if they are being treated with a preventative. If you do get bit, don’t panic. Not all ticks carry Lyme disease. You should, however, pull it gently from your skin with a tweezer and save it in a small plastic container or Ziploc bag, and store it in the freezer. You can take the tick to a doctor to get it tested for Lyme straight away, or you can wait to see if you develop symptoms such as the classic Bull’s Eye rash, flu-like symptoms, fever, stiff neck, or headaches. If you develop these symptoms and don’t recall getting bitten by a tick, you can still request Lyme testing from your doctor.

As the warmer weather rolls in, don’t worry about being outside. Simply take precautions and make sure to check for ticks on yourself, family members, and pets daily.

Tulip Time !!

As winter in New York was breathing its last chilly breath, we hurried up spring a bit by embarking on Avalon Waterway’s “Tulip Time in Holland and Belgium” river cruise.  In March, we set sail for a stellar week of historic sights, fascinating tours, delicious food and outstanding accommodations.

We have sailed on a few European river cruises in the past and Avalon’s “Tulip Time” cruise was always on the top of my “to sail” list. I’m always looking for an easy start and end to our vacations and due to flying from JFK, this cruise checked that box off.  Delta flies nonstop to Amsterdam as well as non-stop home from Brussels, thus making our flight arrangements very easy.

Tulips in Holland are in bloom for less than 2 months a year from mid-late March to early May, and what a magical time it is! The actual timing is weather dependent, so if tulip viewing is #1 on your vacation list, book your cruise in April to be safe.

We embarked on Avalon’s “Imagery II” in Amsterdam and were wowed by the subtle beauty of the décor and the incredibly warm greeting we received from the staff.  Holding only 128 passengers and 37 crew, there were never lines for anything. By day two everyone was familiar, and the ship felt like home.

Our week’s ports were three cities in Holland and three cities in Belgium. Avalon includes a choice of 2 or 3 guided tours each day. They offer Active, Classic or Discovery along with optional ones you can purchase if you like.

Sailing on a river cruise is one of the most relaxing vacations you can take as all the planning is done for you. Avalon includes a daily complimentary shore excursion, complimentary wine, beer and soda at lunch, dinner and happy hour and free WiFi.

You unpack only once and enjoy your spacious cabin for the week as your ship sails onto the next port and your next adventure.

Blackstone Steakhouse

10 Pinelawn Rd., Melville • 631-271-7780

blackstonesteakhouse.com

Since 2005, Blackstone Steakhouse has raised the bar when delivering prime cuts of beef and seafood offerings with the fusion of artful Japanese Sushi. Located in the heart of Melville’s business district, Blackstone is a popular draw for hundreds of corporate offices with a strong following of customers that come Island-wide. Sister restaurants include Rare 650-Syosset, Insignia-Smithtown, Opus Steakhouse-Jericho and Bijou of Melville. As its name suggests, a decor of quarry stone, warm woods with contemporary appointments are all the allure. General manager Dodo Tecusan has been an integral part of the Scotto family of restaurants since 2005. As Mr. Tecusan explained to me, “Our goal is to make every customer feel like they are the most important person on earth. This is our philosophy, and it shows.” Dodo is also very proud to share with me that Blackstone is only one of two restaurants along the entire eastern seaboard that have the right to serve authentic Kobe beef. It is a special certification that Blackstone proudly displays.

A diverse menu has been designed to appeal to a wide spectrum of clientele. Signature steaks include the classic Bone-in Ribeye, which is my go-to every time I come to dine; flash-broiled with charred exterior, always comes to a perfect medium rare. Equally popular is the Kurobuta Japanese Pork Chop. A bountiful portion, served with Mitsu apple celery root puree, soy-braised bacon and Asian yam. Seafood favs include the Lime N’ Coconut Chilean Seabass, prepared in a lime and coconut marinade, then encrusted in coconut and macadamia nuts which elevate the flavor profile and texture of this firm yet delicate cut. Beautifully presented with purple yam, drops of aji chili and cucumber salad.

For me, the sides are what pull everything together. A sumptuous selection of roasted brussels sprouts, crispy fried onions, hash brown and lobster mac and cheese… well the list goes on. Don’t stress, order a few for the table. Their sushi and signature rolls keep in step with all that excites its patrons. Prepared by their inhouse Master Sushi Chef, Blackstone will win you over with their original sushi creations that work well for a starter or as a complete dinner. I like to start with one of their signature rolls, like their “Volcano,” made with king crab, pepper tuna, drizzled with a Honey Wasabi Sauce. You have to try the “Blackstone Supreme”, prepared with Wagyu Beef, avocado, spicy tuna and king Crab in eel sauce, scallion, tobiko. With my Makers Mark Bourbon, it doesn’t get much better than this. The list of Signature Rolls and Special Rolls goes on. Whatever you try, you are certain to enjoy. Blackstone’s is the perfect setting for corporate functions or any special occasion. Classic ambience, outstanding food, and impeccable service have made Blackstone Steakhouse who they are.

3 Tips for Creating a Summer of Unplugged Fun

Between school, work and entertainment, there are times when screens can seem like a pervasive part of modern life. For all the positive aspects of technology, there can also be a desire for children to have stretches of unplugged learning and participate in educational activities that do not require a screen.

Why Unplugged Learning Matters

“Unplugged learning is important to balance the screen time children may experience with other forms of learning; to promote physical activities, social interaction and creativity; and develop the essential skills that bolster them throughout their exploration and growth as individuals,” said Rurik Nackerud from KinderCare’s education team.

Summer can be an ideal time to focus on unplugged learning as it often brings a break from the traditional academic year and activities.

“We want summer to be a time when children can put down technology and connect with one another face-to-face, build important creativity skills and learn how to be social with one another without the buffer of screens,” said Khy Sline from KinderCare’s education team. “They can play, run, be immature and laugh with their friends, giggle at the silly things and find joys in those in-person interactions with one another.”

Tips for Creating Unplugged Fun as a Family

  1. Get Outdoors. Make time as a family to get outside and explore, even if it’s simply a walk around the block after dinner. Help children notice the little things like a bug on the sidewalk or the way the sun filters through tree leaves to make patterns on the ground. Ask them about the things they see and give your children the space to ask questions and work together to find the answers. This helps teach children collaborative learning skills: asking questions, sharing ideas and working together to reach an answer.

  1. Read Together. This could mean going to the library to check out new books or exploring your family’s bookshelves for old favorites. Snuggle up together for family story time. If children are old enough to read on their own, invite them to read to you or their younger siblings. Talk about the story or even act out favorite parts to help your children actively participate in story time, which may help them better understand the story’s concepts.

  1. Encourage Creative Thinking. Help children expand their ability to think creatively by working together to make a craft or project. For example, the next time a delivery box arrives at your home, encourage your children to turn it into something new using craft supplies on hand. A blanket could turn a box into a table for a pretend restaurant while some tape or glue could transform it into a rocket ship or train. When everyone’s done creating and playing, the box can be broken down for recycling. This activity can help children literally think outside of the box and apply their own unique ideas and creativity to create something new.

Brighten Your Brunch Spread

A staple of warm weekend days, brunch combines the best flavors of the first two meals of the day. Every great brunch spread complements its savory items with something sweet, something refreshing and a signature beverage, and there’s one ingredient that can help cover all of those bases – 100% orange juice.

An option like Florida Orange Juice is not only delicious but delivers a powerful combination of vitamins, minerals and phytonutrients that have associated health benefits. One of nature’s nutrient dense foods, one 8-ounce glass of orange juice provides 100% of the recommended daily value of vitamin C and is also a good source of potassium, folate and thiamin, making it a great substitute for sugar-sweetened beverages and simple addition to brunch staples like this Orange Oatmeal.

When combined with a healthy lifestyle, 100% orange juice may also help support a healthy immune system. Orange juice contains beneficial plant compounds, flavonoids and colorful carotenoids to aid in fighting inflammation and cell communication. It is also rich in vitamin C, which helps strengthen immune systems by protecting cells and promoting the production and function of immune cells. Vitamin D, which can be found in fortified juices, also plays an important role in regulating immune response and helps immune cells fight off bacteria and viruses that get into the body.

Since 100% orange juice is naturally almost 90% water, it can help support hydration as it includes several electrolytes like potassium, magnesium and, in fortified juices, calcium, to aid in fluid balance. Combining Florida Orange Juice, watermelon juice and grapefruit juice, this Citrus Watermelonade is a bright, seasonal thirst quencher that is the perfect addition to your drink selection at brunch.

“Maintaining overall wellness and hydration is important as we ease into the warmer months of the year and more time is spent outdoors,” said Dr. Rosa Walsh, director of scientific research at the Florida Department of Citrus. “Florida Orange Juice includes many essential vitamins and minerals that aid in hydration, and it is a great complement to water in helping to provide nourishment before, during or after any activity.”

Citrus Watermelonade

1          cup hot water

2          cups sugar

6          cups watermelon, seeded, rind removed and cut into 1-inch pieces, divided

2          cups Florida Orange Juice

1          cup Florida Grapefruit Juice

3/4       cup lemon juice

3/4       cup lime juice

2          cups Florida Oranges, cut into 1-inch pieces, peeled

1/2       cup mint leaves

ice, for serving

Florida Orange Slices, for garnish (optional)

watermelon chunks, for garnish (optional)

In small saucepan over low heat, combine hot water and sugar; heat until sugar is dissolved. Refrigerate until chilled.

In blender, puree 4 cups watermelon until smooth.

In large pitcher, stir watermelon juice, chilled sugar syrup, orange juice, grapefruit juice, lemon juice and lime juice until combined.

Add remaining watermelon pieces, orange pieces and mint leaves; refrigerate 2-3 hours until well chilled.

Serve over ice in glasses. Garnish with orange slices and watermelon chunks, if desired.

Orange Oatmeal

1          cup Florida Orange Juice

1 1/2    cups water

1          cup quick-cooking steel-cut oats

1          Florida Orange, peeled and diced

1          tablespoon agave nectar or honey

1/4       teaspoon cinnamon

1/4       teaspoon salt

In medium saucepan over high heat, bring orange juice and water to boil.

Add oats to boiling liquids.

Return to boil then reduce to medium heat and cook, uncovered, 5 minutes, stirring frequently.

Mix in diced orange, agave nectar, cinnamon and salt. Remove pan from heat; let stand 1 minute before serving.
