Bringing Outdoor Plants Indoors for the Winter

Just because warm weather is on hiatus doesn’t mean we have to be without the joys and beauty of plants during the winter. While there isn’t much to do outside in the garden during the cold months, your green thumb can be put to use indoors.

Did you know that many traditional annual plants, especially those in hanging baskets, can easily be converted to house plants until next summer? Many varieties of vines, herbs, and potted tropical trees (such as palm and hibiscus) will prevail in a sunny indoor spot. They also provide many health benefits while your home gets a touch of green all year long and the plants continue to grow and mature. So, when spring rolls around, they’ll look full and lush.

There’s not much to it: simply bring plants in prior to the first frost, and ensure they receive adequate sunlight and water while indoors. Fertilize regularly; oftentimes, plants will go through a semi-dormant period during the winter. Remember that the days are shorter and shadows longer, so keep an eye on how much sunlight the plant receives each day. If you notice yellowing leaves despite adequate water, increase the sun exposure by moving the plant to different locations. Double check that the angle of the window and sun isn’t accidentally burning the leaves.

To help keep the shape of hanging plants, consider a plant stand, where the pot can rest off the ground and the vines/leaves can drape naturally. This will minimize breakage and reduce the risk of the plant being malformed when it’s put back outside in the spring. Remember to harden off the plant before returning it back outside full time.

Have a wonderful
holiday season and
Happy New Year!

Top 5 Tools for a Winter Workout at Home

Let’s face it, when it’s cold and dark outside it can be difficult leaving the comfort of your home, especially for an activity like going to the gym. Winter has a way of sucking the motivation right out of us, which can impact our health and body goals.

Just because the weather keeps us inside, doesn’t mean you have to skip a workout; you can get a killer workout without leaving the house. Expensive equipment is not necessary, although there are a few tools that will help make a successful home workout. Lose the excuses (and the weight) this winter with my top five tools for an ultimate home workout.

1Kettlebells. With just one kettlebell you can work your entire body. You can burn fat, build muscle, target specific areas, and work up a sweat to brag about. A kettlebell workout will also improve aerobic capacity, increase strength, build explosive power, and even improve balance. An adjustable kettlebell is a great option, it takes up hardly any space and you can increase intensity. You can go with an affordable Amazon find or the Bowflex kettlebell- which ranges from 8-40 lbs.

2Jump rope. A jump rope will take the place of your gym’s cardio machine. That’s right, jumping rope burns a ton of calories, increases the heart rate, and assists with hand-eye coordination. And, no need to jump rope for 20 minutes; you can jump for 30 seconds (at a moderate pace), or 20 seconds (fast paced), followed by a 30 second rest. Repeat for 10-12 minutes.

3Ankle Weights. One of my favorite tools for a lower body burn. Adding ankle weights to exercises like leg lifts, kickbacks, donkey kicks, step-ups, and V-ups, will give you a burn beyond your imagination. Portable, small and inexpensive, ankle weights are a must for targeting the legs, glutes, and core.

4 – Sneakers. On sunny days, when the weather is not as brutal, an outdoor jog in the fresh air may be exactly what you need. Whether jogging, walking, jumping, or strength training, ankle and foot stability are crucial. I like the Alphatorsion 2.0 Adidas. Made with engineered mesh, it hugs the foot securely, yet is breathable and flexible. The rubber sole has a grood grip and offers a springy bounce, making it a great running shoe. You may not choose this sneaker for lifting in the gym, however, it’s a great, affordable, and even stylish choice for home workouts.

5An exercise app. Free, inexpensive or pricey, there are tons of workout apps available. When you get bored or need a more intense challenge, these apps are essential. You’ll learn new exercises, be guided through a HIIT or strength training workout, and so much more. Pick one or ten!

Holiday Trends 2021

While people throughout the country are beginning to move about their daily lives once again, things are certainly far from ‘back to normal’. We are inching our way back to activities and occasions of all kinds. As we move into the holiday season, some will be planning traditional festivities while others will be planning for the merriment to take place right at home. How does this impact holiday fashion trends for this transitional year? Let’s look at the options at our fingertips.

Holiday-wear is known for its sparkle …its celebratory flare. For those getting ready to head out for holiday parties, you will be thrilled to see slip dresses with sequins, pearls, or feathered trim. Earrings, purses, and pumps are being shown with similar embellishments; while any one can easily add pop to your ensemble, don’t go overboard. For example, if your dress is edged with feathered trim, avoid accessories with the same. It will overwhelm the look and diminish the effect. The same holds true for sequins and pearls. Choose one for your statement piece and let the rest of your ensemble serve to round out your look.
If you are a fan of leather, you will find plenty to choose from. Whether your preference is pants, dress, or jacket, leather is a top choice this season – in traditional black and brown, along with several other color options.

Corsets are another holiday trend being shown by many of today’s top designers. Corset dresses and tops are available, which can be paired with skirts or trousers. You’ll find them in leather, lace, sheers, and a whole host of fabrics choose from.

Heading to a small home gathering? Your top choices are patterned fancy trousers with one of the many soft, fluffy sweaters being shown. Try a wider leg option in a shimmery fabric with a sweater that fits close at the waist for a stylish, elegant look that is perfectly comfortable. Not a fan of sweaters? Lavish blouses in silks and other rich fabrics are readily available. Rather than a high heeled option, pair your outfit with plush, soft shoes that have all the comfort of your favorite slippers.

If staying in is your plan, you’ll be happy to know that designers have you covered. Cozy and fabulous is the theme that runs through the options you’ll find. Try a 2-piece knit ensemble that will look charming and feel so soft on your skin. Perhaps you’d prefer a pair of swanky pajamas in silk, satin, or with an oh-so-soft faux fur edging. Holiday themed patterns abound, giving you endless choices for the perfect pair of pjs.

No matter what look you’re going for, you’ll find plenty of red, black, winter white, purple, and, of course, silver and gold. Whether your holidays will be spent out and about, at a small gathering, or staying in and snuggling up, think glitz, glam, and cozy for the perfect find.

SUNMED – Your CBD Store

Patrick Consalvas & Mike Anacone, Owners

The story starts with founder, Rachael Quinn, whose quality of life was affected by Crohn’s disease. For Rachael, CBD was the only remedy that helped her gain quality of life back. After Quinn’s positive experience, she developed the urge to share with others, which led her to open the first Your CBD store in Bradenton, Florida in 2018. Realizing the store’s success, Quinn and her husband (the company’s CEO), founded an innovative product line called SUNMED – made from the highest quality ingredients.

With locations all over the United States, each Sunmed-Your CBD Store offers a safe, comfortable, and inviting environment where guests can learn about CBD, try samples, and feel empowered to make an informed decision on the best personalized cannabinoid formulation.

Having celebrated the second anniversary of their Commack location (in Peppertree Commons) in October 2023, Sunmed-Your CBD Store welcomes you in for all your health and wellness needs! Owners, Patrick Consalvas and Mike Anacone, are a great duo – they listen carefully to every customer and guide them towards the right product. Along with owning Your CBD Store, Patrick and Mike have been partners in multiple small businesses, giving them much experience.

“We felt this was a niche because CBD products are very misunderstood and people do not have a place to go to become educated, aside from searching online and hoping a product is of high quality and consistency. Our store is somewhere customers can come to learn about Hemp and CBD and have all their questions answered in a nice environment,” says Patrick. What makes Sunmed different than most? While other companies are focused purely on CBD itself, Sunmed takes an innovative approach to hemp and hemp products—by concentrating on the entire profile of the plant such as CBN, CBG and CBC to name a few. This allows them to develop products directly in response to the consumer experience.

For customers at all hesitant about cannabis products, The Endocannabinoid System (ECS) is a group of receptors that makes up a very complex regulatory system throughout the human brain, body, central and peripheral nervous systems. Phytocompounds found in hemp help maintain the body’s internal stability (homeostasis) by adjusting the flow of neurotransmitters and regulating bodily functions such as appetite, sleep, emotion and movement.

Your CBD Store, (awarded USA CBD Expo 2019, and Best CBD Tincure) has everything from Oil Tinctures, Water Solubles and Whole Plant Products, Edibles, Skin Care, Pet Products and more – many of which are USDA certified organic. They carry a Sleep line and an additional line called TRIM – for customers looking to lose weight. TRIM offers a natural approach, as it features THC-V, (a compound in hemp known to naturally suppress the appetite). Upon exploring Your CBD Store’s large variety of products, you’ll find that many of them are Vegan, Gluten Free, as well as Organic. They offer great flavors such as: Strawberry Lime, Grape, Sour Apple, Peach, Watermelon, and more (depending on the type of product it is you need). All of their hemp-based, transparent products, are also backed by third-party laboratory testing. Within each lab result, customers are shown what is and isn’t detected in each product – how much cannabinoid per serving, total CBD, etc.

So, let the friendly and knowledgeable staff assist you in finding what’s right! Commack hours are Monday-Saturday 10-7 and Sunday 10-5. Visit, www.getsunmed.com to locate the Commack store and get on track to feeling your best!
